Not impressed

Even though I have been a critic of Big Al this season , there is no comparision between him and the current England center forward,

Emile Heskey is a powerful young man, coupled with this physique is a distinct lack of pace, awareness, average heading ability,an abysmal first touch, no balance, keeps falling over , do you think early in the game Sven will pick up on this point.

There's a story cracking down the wires that Roma have lodge an objection and an appeal against the referee tonight, they want the match voided and played again on a neutral ground.

I don't know if their suggestion is that the referee was payrolled by someone other than UEFA, but I've just been discussing it with some Mickeys on one of their boards and they are crapping themselves that it might have to go again.

It'll be an interesting couple of days methinks.

Weighed in at Annfield, result will stand , unless evidence is produced before next game in one week that the Man from Spain was defintlet out to Gain, I can see how it can be construed that way ITK after the events of this evening

I can't see how it can be changed either, but precedence has been set. Leeds in Champs League(?)Us in FA cup, Someone on the Mickey board has just pitched in with a match in Norway/Sweden so its not totally unknown, albeit that they occured under slightly different circumstances.

I'm only telling you what has been fired up the Newswires. Its unlikely to change things, but the word has it that they have objected.

BTW - its two weeks to the next game isn't it......not a week.

What happened? Didn't sound like anything overly controversial from the webcast

Ciara. Score 1-0 to Roma, Owen had just missed penalty , Roma sub hit a shot from just outside box, Babbel doing a Marcellino turned his back to it, the ball struck him on the elbow, the ref immediatly pointed to penalty spot, Pool defence heednhands, Roma elated, the ref then made his way over to the position refs take up for pens,Gabriel B is collecting the ball to take the spot kick , only for the ref to signal a corner. Surrounded by Roma players he flashed yellow cards for fully 40 seconds, the poor guy lost it.

It sounds like he's made Graham Barber look professional!

I thought the ref was a disgrace. Totally lost control of the game. I don`t think it was a pen, but having pointed to the spot TWICE, and then insisting that it was in fact a corner, booking so many people he couldn`t have possibly kept count, no wonder Roma feel disgruntled. I wanted Liverpool to go through - but, the game was very entertaining and I suspect it would have gone to extra time, had Roma been given the penalty. I didn`t think the other pen he gave was a good decision either, especially in view of all the much, much worse tackles he seemed to ignore (by both sides) during the game. Not pretty or particularly skillful football, but for me, another entertaining game ruined by dreadful refereeing.

I think it would be very unwise to start re-playing games, and if you think about it even for a few minutes, we could probably all come up with a list as long as your arm of fixtures that would be prime candidates. But I do feel that some action should be taken against referees who are blatantly not up to it.

Incidentally, how many players did you think had been shown a second yellow?

BTW I thought Heskey`s attempts to put the Roma keeper`s knee in the back of the net was disgusting. (:o|

Personally I think it's a case of fair play to the ref!! it wasn't a penalty so he made a genuine mistake by awarding it, he then corrected that by doing the right thing and changing his mind, too many refs would've let it stand just because they didn't want to back down or look silly and a major injustice would've stood.....

I applaud the man....

And yes Heskey's kick on the goal keeper was a disgrace, he was fucking useless as well......

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

I know that luck plays a big part in any great run....but freakin' hell....the ref pointed to the spot IMMEDIATELY, probably before the ball had actually crossed the by-line and he then ran to the spot before pointing DIRECTLY to it AGAIN....then the plot was lost.

Roma played well...Boy Wonder and Heskey were crap.....the Italians should feel let down by a dodgy ref....REPLAY :-)

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

Although dodgy refereeing and Delveccio diving was all that got Roma past us last year. Oh and Charvet giving away a mad penalty. Got no sympathy for Roma.

Spot on Dougal....the cheating bastards got what they deserved....it is a terrible shame however that those poxy mercenaries Hamann and Ziege couldn't have been crippled though....

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

I don't think you can have a replay because of a crap referee. If he really was nobbled, he would have to be pretty stupid to seemingly award a penalty, and then change his mind..he wouldn't have even considered it in the first place. It seems pretty obvious to me that he genuinely changed his mind and thought he could get away with it because pointing towards the spot could also be construed as pointing past the spot to the goal line (admittedly nowhere near the corner flag). The reaction of both the incredulous Babbel and one of the Roma players , who was already trundling the ball to the corner (both who were on the 'right' side of the incident), probably swung the decision in his mind.

Time somebody mentioned poor Sunlun having to play against 11 players for 30 seconds when the ref allowed the sub on at Tranmere to replace a sent off player. Now that WAS funny .... Peter Reid went ape shit ?

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

Yeah, he really got out of his tree.

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

Ref instinctively pointed to the spot then remembered the little brown packet stuffed with cash back in his changing room. Referees don't change their minds. Did he reverse any other of his awful decisions? Of course not. Nobbled definitely.
