Do we want English teams to succeed in Europe?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

It's midway through the Liverpool Roma game and it looks as though Liverpool will make it to the next round. I'm quite happy about that. Obviously I want Man U to go out of the champs leauge. Not so sure on Leeds or Arsenal. What abot U?

I always support British clubs in Europe. I will review this if the Hackems manage to fluke a euro spot!

Howay Geordie, you can't want the Mancs to win can you?

After all we are Europeans now, not just British.

I only want Manure to win the champs league since they will get an automatic spot which in turn will open up another chance for us, if they don't then feck 'em. I couldn't give a hoot aboot Arsenal, I'd like to see leeds do really well. I'd like to see liverpool do well too. The more places they take up both domestically and in europe the more chance we have. If sunderland get into europe then I hope that a superleague is formed immediatly and they don't get in we do.

All my reasons are based on the wellness and health of NUFC at everyone elses expense.

The ref in the Roma ? Pool game wants English games to progress. He pointed to the spot when Roma scored then changed his mind to a corner, when Roma complained he booked half of them. Is he under instructions to put Roma out because of their ULTRA's?

Referee on big money to make Liverpool win game. All in East Asia know score yesterday . Hidetoshi Nakarta best player in world , but made to look like Gazza crap. It's a big fix don't you see it?

indifferent. all their winning in europe does is make them richer.

YES, WHAT`S THE PROBLEM!

Hey Lei.....didn't I used to know you brother Doon?

-- Anonymous, February 22, 2001

I wanted Leeds and Arsenal both to win the other night....however....I was on me prayer mat a-la Dancin' Dickhead, praying that they'd crumble. I swear to God, the old Liverpool thing is creeping back....not the team...I mean the FANS. I feel dirty!!

LR, I'm not sure what you mean, but last night, I swear half our office was a lifelong Liverpool supporter. Said it before on here: Liverpool fans are worse than your lot by a country mile for having gloryhunter supporters.

Douggie..it seems you know EXACTLY what I mean...and the way they are talking about a historic treble is astounding me.

I'll never forget sitting in the old Strawberry watching the famous Pool vs Arse game when the cockneys snatched the league with virtually the last kick of the season(1987?). The place was heaving with Geordie Liverpool fans! NUFC were a joke at the time so it seemed every part time glory seeker latched onto the scousers. It made me sick and I immediately became a temporary Arsenal fan. Very glad I did too. They've probably all got St. James season tickets now and claim to be lifelong Toon fans.

The @rse and Leeds can win for me.
Sorry LR, but I just be @rsed with manure any more.
I'm afraid Houiller has wiped away the longstanding respect I had for Liverpool with how he has gone about putting his squad together by destabilising players with other clubs (eg. Harmoan, Heskey, Ziege, Barmby). The guy is a froggie charlatan, and I desperately hope he fails.

Geordie Reds (Manc or Scouse)are the anti-Christ.

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

The only reason I want Leeds and Arse to qualify is so that we can hopefully meet one of them in the next stage.

To be honest...I wouldn't care if either of them won it though...I wouldn't loose sleep over it. I will however be fukcni' annoyed if the bindippers win a pot...any pot.

COME ON BRUM!!

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

Come on Brum ... LR, or should that now be MB? Starting to support your local team at last?

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

Nope....my LOCAL team is the Lambs...come on you Tamworth...I'd be a glory hunter for supporting the Blues!!

I know what you mean Dread, I remember on Hillsborough day we were playing Arse, we were pants but when Ares sang they were top of the League the Mags started singing LIVERPOOL (& no-one knew what was happening at Hillsborough), I've never been so ashamed - I loved it when Arse won the title. Dougal is right, While a lot of Manure fans became such either directly or indirectly because of Munich (seems like voting Tory because of the Brighton bomb) Liverpool fans are pure glory seekers.

Oh I want Leeds to win the Champs cup, then Arse then Real Madrid. Liverpool - don't really care except if they win the UEFA & finnish third do we get an extra UEFA place?

Dave...this point about MUFC fans and Munich is an interesting one and one that gets aired many times but not delved into.

I think I can safely say that there are more football fans in this country now supporting whatever team, because of Euro 96. Euro 96 opened up the eyes of fringe supporters. Munich did the same in a way. Many people started taking an interest in MUFC after that especially as we got to Wembley that year. Who better for a neutral to support than MUFC that day? After that I expexct their new interest in that club bloomed into love.

I do have a bit of an anti-Liverpool thing, partly because they are such whingey knackers and partly because I honestly don't know a single Liverpool fan who was born even in the North West. Having said that, Everton are just about as repulsive in their own way.

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

I'm too young but I believe the Man U / Munich factor led the way for people with little interest in football/ little passion / no culture to follow a team from another area on grounds of glamour etc. The next big thing - Liverpool reaped the benefit of this & the Milton Keynes type was able to latch on to the most successful team of the time. For me, this support can never have the depth, passion or longevity of someone who has truely loved & lost .

Douggie...you know a little bit about the TTC's so I'll tell you this. Today I had to send out by Royal Mail some forms to 12 people who left thier address after showing interest in what we are doing. One address was in Middlesex....the rest were Manchester or Cheshire. Just a thought.

-- Anonymous, February 23, 2001

I think yer wrong Dave. At that time MUFC were no more glamourous than Newcastle and probably less than Bolton, Blackpool or Wolves.

I love the music of a certain rock band...used to follow 'em all over the country giggin'...got stacks of their vinyl and CD...never once been to Peckham mind.

In fairness, in 1958, we were one of the great English sides, having won 3 FA Cups in quick succession fairly recently.
