Do the awards really count for anything? Are you more likely to see a movie if it wins an Oscar? Do you watch these stupid things?

1. Yup, I'm more likely to buy something if it won an award.

2. If you've only tried skiing once, you'll will hate it -- but it has the quickest learning curve of anything I can think of. You must attempt to ski at least 2 days in a row before deciding to hate it for life.

3. Why is some guy trying to avoid you? Are you becoming stalker girl?

The bands I listen to are usually obscure and way off mainstream. But I like award shows just to lust after girlies in their designer outfits.

These awards are meaningless..maybe i don't care for Grammies because most of what i used to listen to ( classic rock ) never won Grammies. I remember complaining in 1985 when Michael Jackson won some 7 or 8 grammies, and Led Zeppelin ( my fave band then ) never had.

Perhaps its just a way by record companies to boost up record sales. Indeed, as Jen says, how can one really compare musicians and give awards, when music, like most arts, is so subjective ?

But you know what, there are many people who do start listening to a band, after they win Grammies and hit the limelight. Like Dire Straits, who have been around producing cool music since 1977, and they become big all of a sudden in the mid-80s..

I do tend to watch these things, if only to see the screw ups (i.e. Liz Taylor at the Golden Globes). And, shallow as I am, I can let them influence my choices, at least movie-wise.

By the way, don't feel bad about not liking to ski. I live in Denver and I don't like to ski, either. Try telling that to people without getting disbelieving looks!

No, awards are meaningless, just an example of humankind's propensity to congratulate itself for any and every thing, and to make any excuse to get together and have a party. I'm not more likely to see an Oscar-winning movie merely for its having won -- only if I had wanted to see it anyway. No, I don't watch awards shows. (I used to, until I realized I hadn't a clue six months later who had won what, and cared even less.)

As to Jam Master Jay, some trivia: back in the day -- early/mid-80's, whenever Run-DMC were popular -- I worked at an airport hotel here in NYC. One late-night shift, about 2 or 3 a.m., a couple came in, young black man and woman. I checked them in to their room; as I reviewed the registration card, the name struck me: "Jason Mizell." It seemed familiar to me. As I took Mr. Mizell's credit card, I spied a wallet photo in his open billfold, which I recognized to be a studio portrait of Run-DMC. I knew who he was.

Later (a few hours, toward morning), as they were checking out, I said to him, "Hey, you're Jam Master Jay, aren't you!?" He gave me the most quizzical look, as if to say, "How'd YOU know that, whiteboy?" I don't remember what he said, but he laughed and I think he was pleased to be recognized.

(BTW, as per my e-mail address, I'm somewhat older than the 30-something cohort you identified.)

Here's the deal- the acadmy, People's choice, Grammys, and Emmys are important because people who do great work should be rewarded but it's just gotten to a point where there are so many nobody cares any more. I mean the teen choice awards, that's just beyond sad.
