NEWSWEEK Poll: Clinton’s Popularity Takes a Dive

The former president’s approval rating hurt by Rich pardon

Tabloid papers on Clinton' tribulations

NEWSWEEK WEB EXCLUSIVE

Feb. 17 — After a series of controversies about his final days in office, a new NEWSWEEK poll finds that Bill Clinton’s approval ratings have dropped significantly.

THE POLLS SHOW a 56 percent approval rating for the former president, a decline from 66 percent one week ago and 68 percent in January. Just 28 percent of Americans now say Clinton will be viewed by history as an “above average” president, vs. 37 percent one week ago. And 53 percent of Americans now see him as a poor role model. Meanwhile, George W. Bush’s approval rating has increased from 52 percent one week ago to 56 percent. Clinton’s reputation appears to have been damaged most significantly by his pardon of Marc Rich, the fugitive financier. Sixty-five percent of Americans say they disapprove of the Rich pardon and 55 percent say Clinton should be called to testify at Congressional hearings on the subject. But Americans are narrowly divided over whether Clinton himself should be a target of a newly launched criminal investigation into the Rich pardon (42 percent say yes, vs. 43 percent no.) Majorities of those polled say they expect Clinton to succeed financially in the private sector (84 percent) and that he will be able to do a lot for the causes he believes in (58 percent), despite the controversies. Fifty-seven percent say they would try to hear Clinton speak if he were invited by an organization with which they were affiliated.

Meanwhile, 77 percent of those surveyed say they believe Hillary Clinton’s ability to be a successful senator has not been hurt by the controversies surrounding Clinton’s departure from the White House. The NEWSWEEK poll was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates, which interviewed 1,004 adults by telephone on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percent. © 2001 Newsweek, Inc.

After having finished a full 8 years as president, Clinton left office with the highest overall rating in history ever given by the people to a president of the United States of America.

Watch as ‘Billy Boy’s’ approval ratings plummet into the abyss in the next few weeks. Diane Fienstien, well-known liberal mealy-mouth was on CNN this morning trying to distance herself from Clinton over the Marc Rich pardon. This is just the beginning of the fall of the House of Clinton. So, ‘read it @ and weep’, are you in?

Nice call Barry! It is all coming down around the Democrats ears. They can't even get fund raising dollars for a Florida fight against Dubya's brother Jeb, because of their hero Bill's latest baggage.

YES!!!!!

I am a middle-of-the-road conservative that is ecstatic that we have a quality administration with a top notch President running our country. However, this is tempered with the feeling of disgust that we allowed Bill Clinton to stay in the White House for 8 years. Now that he is out of office, with the cloak of respectability given to a sitting President removed, he will be vilified for the low-life that he is. Oh, you liberals must be so proud.

Now, the good people of New York will find out just how foolish they were to put Hillary Clinton in the Senate.

1st Annual Simpleton's Convention Held

http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20010218/pl/politics_con servatives_dc_1.html

Memes attending were giddy over being vindicated for being, well, RIGHT. "If not fer the Liberal Mediacs, Clintoon would have bin saw as the source of all probems which befall menkind lung bfer now" said Joe Stepford, a longdistance phone telemarketeer from Bumbf*cknowhere.

Jim Lord, famous Y2k guru also attended. Strangely he had little to say beyond he was ecstatic over the free ammo given away to all attendees. "I love small shiny objects, these will provide me hours of enjoyment back at my hutt on Togo". Bruce Beach had no comment but did hold Jim's bullets at the convention.

Doc, I went to the article you linked and could find no mention of Stepford, Lord, or my personal favorite ‘cellar dweller’, Bruce Beach. You been munchin’ on them cactus again Doc? However, as a conservative, I’ll take these folks any day over the PUSH/Rainbow Coalition clowns. Clinton in Harlem……it just seems SO RIGHT!

"Clinton in Harlem……it just seems SO RIGHT! "

How so Barry? what makes it right?

-- (doc_paulie@hotmail.com), February 18, 2001.

Hey Doc, I’m the fisherman here…yer bait has died!

-- Barry (bchbear863@cs.com), February 18, 2001.

You're quite the witty one, Doc.

-- Dr. Pibb (dr.pibb@zdnetonebox.com), February 18, 2001.

Those of us in the vanguard always considered Clinton to be a useful idiot. We got much more mileage from him than ever expected. But he is baggage now and must be jettisoned.

Bill, you're lucky. Stalin would have sent you to the Gulag in '94 and with your pasty white thighs you would have been a bitch within 2 days.

Why is it SO RIGHT that Clinton is in Harlem? Well, because in the Oct 1998 New Yorker, author Toni Morrison declared him to be our first black president.

Keep the bigots happy, that's my motto!

Keeps them from blowing up women and children in places like Oklahoma City.

They don't like Jews, blacks, and they get violent about it, but if you keep them busy, they're as happy as a little kid with a video game.

Clinton kept them busy. Now that he's fading into the sunset, and the economy is teetering on a cliff... (NOT Dubya's fault, ya hear, even though the market breathes political ether...)

They know republicans can tow the line. Never has a republican ever had sex out of wedlock... And if he did, he never lied about it to spare his family.

And George W Bush, praise his name, has no skeletons in his closet that will burden our souls with doubt. We know this to be true.

-- repub_clone (praise@jesus.lord), February 19, 2001.

Now that he's fading into the sunset,

ROFLMAO! If he were fading, he wouldn't be on the news every night and the Democrats might even be able to raise a little money in Florida to fund an opposing candidate for Jeb Bush!

If this is fading, I hope and pray Bill continues fading for four more years! Then congress could expect: 1) A landslide republican majority to be elected in two years. 2) Three REALLY conservative supreme court justices to be installed 3) Most any item on Dubyas agenda to be passed.

PLEASE Bill! Keep fading!!!

Trust me on this...the DNC WISHES he would really fade away.

Good post. PLEASE...give us more. Great fun. Good laugh. ;-)

-- Ain't Gonna Happen (Not Here Not@ever.com), February 19, 2001.

In reality ‘clone’, the true bigots are often disguised as liberal Democratic office holders…..people like Bill Clinton. Republicans show respect for ALL citizens where as the Clinton’s of the world will pimp themselves to minority groups and deceive them into thinking they really care. They will throw tons of money and freebies at these groups in return for their vote. The problem is; where do those tons of bucks come from? It is important for the children of our country to have quality role models so I think I’ll pass on low- lifes like Bill Clinton and Jesse Jackson.

-- Barry (bchbear863@cs.com), February 19, 2001.

Clinton's problem is that now he doesn't have a war room. He can't spin anything and even his most ardent supporters (Daley, Morris, and Stepanoupulus come to mind) are saying he made an ass of himself in leaving office. I didn't read the article he wrote in yesterday's paper but no one thinks he actually justified his actions. Only a very small dwindling few still come out to support his actions.

But ya know Doc, I can't say that Bush is jumping with joy even though deep down I think he has to be. He still maintains the "no comment" attitude.

-- Maria (anon@ymous.com), February 19, 2001.

Barry how did you arrive at your opinion of Harlem? and what exactly is this opinion? Can you describe the place and why it is SO RIGHT for Bill Clinton's office?

-- (doc_paulie@hotmail.com), February 19, 2001.

Republicans show respect for ALL citizens

at least when the microphones are off, or when your website contains nothing but complimentary information about them, or when your name does not end in Clinton, or you are a voter in Florida who happens not to be a redneck using fail-proof voting machines.

Like I been saying,,,these are NOT Conservatives,,,they are extremists, blind ones too boot, nice combo, defining in fact.

-- (doc_paulie@hotmail.com), February 19, 2001.

I will honor you, Ain't, Barry, and Maria. Everything you "know" about me is true. Everything my detractors say is false. I wish I had more like you in my ranks... The truth is, they're starting to talk about me now, the traitors.
