There is great uncertainty as to what precisely was the cause of Poe's death. There are many speculations and conjectures as to what sent this genius to his grave, but truth be told, no one knows. It is believed to be a disease indeed, perhaps rabies, dypthiria, or tuberculosis, the killer of his wife, Virginia. He most likely died of tb, but new reaserch is also pointing to rabies, because when they found him he had fome around his mouth. ~Pm

I think that he died of a broken heart because his first/cousin died after only being married for a year. Or he was hurring to fast and had a heart attack.

New evidence points to rabies; however, Poe was also found in a ditch and reeked of alcohol. It is possible he drank himself to death.

Actaully the obituary published in the Baltimor Clipper in October 1849 stated that he died of congestion of the brain. A short time before he was diagnosed with a weak heart and lesions of the brain. He was found in an alley October 3 and was transported by carriagae to Washington College Hospital. Poe came in and out of consciousness at one point refusing a glass of brandy. While in the hospital he gave a number of speches including "Language cannot tell the gushing well that wells, sways and sweeps, tesmpest-like, over me, signaling the 'larm of death'. He asked about friends, and said, "My best friend would be the man who gave me a pistal what I may blow out my brains". Poe called out the name of "Reynold" who has never been identified. At around 5:00 am Sunday October 7 Poe died. His last words were "Lord, help my poor soul." I hope all this helps you. I am doing a paper myself. If you have a question send an email.
