Wednesday February 14 10:45 PM EST Gas Bill Makes School Take Drastic Measures Parents Clean School Every Night Now that it is getting cold again, it's time to worry about high heating bills. One local school is going to drastic measures to make ends meet.Parents and even a student have been helping clean Saint Monica School at 58th and Michigan. Sky-high heating bills meant that the school couldn't afford its outside cleaning service. That is where a small group of parents came in -- every night.

LeNesha Brown is vice president of the school's parent-teacher organization. Brown and her third grade son along with other parents are cleaning the school because officials can't afford to do it any other way.

"Heating these classroom, heating this building got expensive in a hurry. (It went) from $100 one month to $5,000 the next," Brown said.

Brown said that it wasn't a difficult decision to make because it is what she does and it is her role as a parent, so she stepped in where needed.

The parents spend about two to four hours every week night cleaning the school.

"I work an eight-hour, nine-hour job and you're asking to come in for another couple of hours an evening. That took a big toll," Brown said.

The move kept the school from cutting important programs and costing children the best possible education, KMBC reported.

Brown worked with the school's staff to make the change happen. She said that she is hoping that they will only have to clean the school for another few weeks -- until spring http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/kmbc/20010214/lo/314259_1.html
