I know now isn't the best time to ask but I'm doing my article for True Faith and it's called "No more heroes", basically about how we don't really like footballers any more. However, I'm trying to suggest that there are some decent lads among them and that even some of the current crop may go on to become United legends. Can youse let me know who your current fave player is and why and why you think they may have been touched by the hand of greatness. I'm just after a bit of inspiration..

Wrong week to ask, Dougal: I'd trade them all for a pinch of sh*t at the minute but am concerned that somebody must have already done so. I think it's closer to saying that you have a gun, five bullets and six Toon players...which one would have got the sixth shot. Bastards.

Sorry, Softie, I agree. I've promised this article by tomorrow and I feel almost sick at the thought of most of our players....I was hoping that everyone else might habe cheered up and it was just me being morose...:o(

Dead boring I know, but Nobby has to fit that bill. And I reckon like Pedro and Tony Green before him, he will become a leg end sorry legend.

Yes he has the odd bad game when things don't work, but most of the time you are talking touch, quality, power, speed, vision and above all, goalscoring ability with ball control.

And he advertises the Daily Toon on his vest! (see Recognition at last)

Speed? As in pace? ITK, you could run faster,

By the way, ITK, have you got his permission for that ad?

1) You've not seen me run obviously.....!

2) I've said it before....let the buggers knock.........!

Yeah, Nobs is OK, I s'pose although I think he may fall into the category of great players who played for the Mags rather than great Mag players.

You're asking the tough questions tonight, Dougal. I'd say Hughes and Amoebi have potential. Talented players brought through the youth systerm, dedicated, nice guys. But really hard to see how far they'll go at this point. Do they have big enough personalities to become heroes?

I'd say Hughes and Amoebi have potential.

That's it, that's the basis of Dougals piece......someone mentioned the 'H' word!

Good one Ciara, you certainly know how to pull the right strings for Dougal!

ITK, where have you got this pre-occupation with my opinion of Aaron Hughes from?

-- Anonymous, February 15, 2001

Sorry.....have I got it wrong.....I thought from other postings round these parts that you had a soft spot for little Aaron......have I got it wrong.......again?

.......same place as the rest of us Dougal. :-)

Legends take years and years to reach such a pedestal of Legend status. To call any of the current crop anything remotely like a legend would discredit the REAL legends.

Season after season of as consistent as you can get performances would go somewhere towards it. Out of the current squad, only a fit and raring to go Shearer in full charge gets anywhere close.

I'm with ITK. My fave player as you put it is Solano. The lad is the best passer in the team, his touch is phenomenal, he has a quick and innovative football brain, his free Kicks are something to behold just a pity he isn't as strong in the tackle as others.

As for him becoming a legend in the future, he has been loyal when so many other imports have headed off or whinged in the press. He has taken a while to adjust to the EPL but has come good and his best years are still to come. Finally his attitude towards the fans is always impeccable in the press and on the field especially with the T shirt against Leeds

If Solano is such a world class player, why couldn't he take a decent F*****G corner last Sunday? IMO he's only any good playing at home.

-- Anonymous, February 16, 2001

What is with Solano? He ain't world class. He's very good but world class is some description. ITK - I do have a soft spot for Aaron but only because he's one of the Toon's bairns and is doing well and is a top lad.

Is that the real Ciara or the "imposter from Newcastle"? To be honest - we have nobody who could be classed as World Class. How many of our squad would get into a world 11 (even squad of 25) if we to play another team from Galaxy? Exactly.

-- Anonymous, February 16, 2001

Sorry, it's me, Screachie. You OK? Have mailed you via me hotmail account. I agree re world class -

-- Anonymous, February 16, 2001

If you picked the worlds top 50 would we have a chance in hell of getting anyone in? Nope!

-- Anonymous, February 16, 2001

How about World Top Ten in each position...e.g. 10 best keepers etc..

Nope... still don't get any of our players in.... top 25 in each pos? err..... nope

-- Anonymous, February 16, 2001

... unless there is a category of "top ten at hiding" ....

-- Anonymous, February 16, 2001

Top 10 who deserve a hiding?

Just a coat today. byeeee!
