Can someone start a "Thank You" thread? This Genealogy thread is not working!

Well if anyone is looking for info on US based relations, this link posted on the other thread is quite good. http://www.rootsweb.com/roots-l/filelist.html

Of course, my mom's family seems to have the amazing knack of flying under every known radar screen. But it was kinda cool to find the birth records for me and a couple of cousins on my dad's side. Just making me more determined to somehow crack the secret of my mom's side. I'm beginning to think they beamed in from the plant Zog! ;-)

What's you're background Ciara? The US is much more advanced than over here for tracing ancestry. I think the immigration records are pretty good too, but there's a limit to what info is available via the internet, and more particularly without shelling out loads..

There lies the problem for me, Windy. Gotta pay for anything remotely useful, and I don't have enough hard facts to know exactly what I'm looking for. It's going to be a series of wild goose chases before finding anything useful. The weird thing is I can't even find a death record for my grandfather. So either he never had a social security card, or he was whisked off back to Zog before the authorities knew anything about it. No wonder he was so pig-headed about refusing to die in hospital. Refused to go until they let him go home to his own bed. :-)

As for my background, I'm a walking UN. Mom's side: definitely Irish down my grandmother's side(she was the first generation born here), strongly suspect English/Scottish down my grandfather's side but no one knows when the first ancestor actually came over or how. Just some vague memories of an 80-something well on the way to senility.

We do have some scattered bits and pieces on the Irish side. We at least know my great-grandparents had emigrated to America, but went back to Ireland to have their first child cause they wanted at least 1 born over there, then came back here again. So they couldn't have been dirt poor.

Dad's side: Dad born in San Salvador, his parents brought him here when he was 5. The blood tie is suspected of Spanish origin, but again nobody knows when or how. Just that my grandparents supposedly were from families well-off by Salvadoran standards(had servants and such) and tended to alot of blue-eyed blondes(suggests European extraction). There's also been some whispers of Central American Indian heritage somehow thrown into the mix. Those grandparents are also dead now, so there's very little concrete knowledge of their lives before emigration to the US.

The truth is out there.... ;-)

I've found an excellent e-mail list for Northumberland genealogy and local history. Take a look at
http://www.swinhope.demon.co.uk/NorthumbriaFAQ/
I noticed quite a few Cullercoats discussions, which might interest Galaxy. This sort of thing is just what you need to find too Ciara, as there are people with access to various sources of info prepared, within reason, to look things up for free. But that's probably geordie mentality..I'm sure a London list would charge you for it..

Nice one Windy! (:o)

Windy, that site is fun! I`ve been thoroughly enjoying the photographs, especially the one of the Plaza as it was when I was a child, and the caves at Cullercoats. Came over all nostalgic again! (:o)

I don't understand this thread, what has Dunx done to it?

and how do I find out where my Viking ancestors came from?

Rik,

I created a new Genealogy category, and then put this thread in it. Whenever folk want to do new genealogy threads, they categorize them so it keeps them all together.

Galaxy, are you subscribing or just going through the archives? I've managed to piece together quite a few bits and pieces in just a few days, through people with census details and trade directories etc. If you have a chance, read Brian Pears' essays on the ancestor paradox, as he calls it. Not sure if I agree with extrapolating his theory ad infinitum, but after 20 or so generations, it is phenomenal how many ancestors we must have in comparison to local populations.
