Poe himself was American, living in Virginia, Boston, New York, and Baltimore (where he is buried). In stories, it is dependent upon which one as to whether he places himself as a European or an American. Which was more, whether European or American, one cannot precisely say, as it was a fair balance of the two. P A Regan
