BT glitch leaves thousands on hold

Hundreds of thousands of people in London and companies across the capital lost the use of their phones today when a computer crashed at the BT Tower. The phone system became blocked as the working day began. Callers were met with an engaged tone or messages of apology for much of the morning and people calling emergency services faced lengthy waits.

Today a BT spokesman confirmed a hardware problem at a local exchange caused mass congestion in the phone network. He said: "It occurred during a switching upgrade." The problem was clearing up by early afternoon.
