Canon has new Tele-extender's & Scanner

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread

Canon has just announced the introduction of two new tele-extender's replacing the EF 1.4x and EF 2x they currently produce. They are designated as the EF1.4x II and the EF2x II. The new TE's are apparently better and have gaskets both front and rear as well as in the release knobs, making them compatible with the new weatherized Super Tele lenses. MSRP for both TC's are $650 which should mean street prices around $400 after their initial introduction. Information can be obtained by visiting Canon.

Canon also announced a new film scanner called the FS4000US. This could be a dream come true for digital scanning. The Nikon Supercool Scan LS-2000 has ruled the consumer film scanning market for a long time and it would seem Canon would not only rival but far surpass Nikon's top line scanner with this new addition. With 4000dpi resolution at 42 bits, 14 bit A/D conversion, 3.4 dynamic range, USB and SCSI-2 and a new image retouching and enhancement called FARE which should rival or exceed Nikon and Minolta's Digital ICE technology. With a suggested retail price of only $1099, this scanner could go for almost half that on the street with the way computer peripheral prices have been dropping!

Good job Canon!

Howard, it is a little hard to cut through the marketing hype, but it looks like they may be less prone to flare. The press release says they have been improved to decrease internal reflections.

Sorry, I forgot the link to the Scanner, you can find information on the FS4000US at Canon Scanner.

Bill,

Nikon announced the successor to the Coolscan 2000 named the Coolscan 4000, which appears to have specs superior to the Canon scanner with a Dmax of 4.2. The MSRP is higher though, comparable to the current Coolscan 2000.

Are the new teleconverters supposed to provide better sharpness? Or is the improvement only in the waterproofing?

Thanks Brad. Wow, how did your post appear out-of-order?
