The DivX;) avi codec will give the compression that you are looking for if all you want to do is store audio/video on a CD for playback on a PC. If you are looking to make a VideoCD you are restricted to MPG1 at roughly, 10Meg/min. SVideo is MPG2 @ 20Meg/min.

If what you are trying to do is create a VCD, then the MP10 capture software probably has a VCD setting so that way you can capture to VCD compliant MPEG-1 files. Remember that the amount of time that you want on your disc is only limited to the type of CD-R media, so if you have a 74 min CD-R minute disc, you can fit 74min worth of VCD material. Of course, you must also have a software package (I reccomend Nero for it's simplicity and features) that "authors" VCD discs.

Concerning that last post about DiVX format, it will take a HUGE amount of time and a good CPU to produce a DiVX disc. I was told that someone with a P-3 900mhz machine took over half a day to convert an AVI to DiVX format. Plus, you cannot play a DiVX disc in a set top box like a DVD player unlike a VCD where you can play it in alot of DVD players, playstation/sega saturn/CDI/3DO (with special add-ons) and so forth. Just the big inconvenience of DiVX---too long to make, and too incompatible to play.

Actually using a Celeron 266 (no on chip cache) overclocked to 300 MHz, If I remember correctly, I am able to compress four 10 - 15 minute raw avi's to DivX;), running four sessions of Virutal Dub, in about six hours. I do usally start the process just before bed.

I'm purchasing a P3-600E today (the fastest processor my Chaintech BTM mother board will work with). When I get it I will run some real benchmarks.

I use the DivX;) codec for compressing and archiving my home video's. Quality is great despite the heavy compression. Since it's an avi, it simplifies later editing with Virtual Dub. I find the codec has it's place.

I have to agree with Victor, Using Ahead Nero is the BEST way to author your own VCDs as well as encode them.

Now my questions, unfortunately, it does seem like you are limited to exactly 79 minutes of video no matter how you slice it.

Is that true ? Or is there SOME way to take a raw .AVI movie that exceeds 79 minutes and encode it to a true VCD that exceeds 79 minutes either by taking out frames, shrinking the picture size, or degrading the quality in some way ?
