How about a "rock climber" challenge

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

My cousins are modifying a Ford Bronco to be able to "crawl" over large boulders, like the size of a house. I can think of many possibilities for a contest. It would need sure footed action, steep climbing ability, the engine to not cut out on steep angles, how about a challenge??

I believe this is a new variant of "off-road" vehicles. Boulder crawling is a separate sport, dominated by various Jeeps, but including, as James said, old Broncos (like 1970) and other small 4WDs. I'm not sure how they would do this in the junkscrapheapyard, but there are plenty of spots in SoCal where they could shoot the competition.

As for different approaches, there might be some possibilities between small/light and powerful/heavy, but I'm not sure. The only boulder crawlers I've read about are all pretty light and pretty powerful.

Thanks to James for posting a new idea.

But the basic point is....Too many car challenges. Dune Buggies, Dragsters, hill climbers, truck pulls. I wanted to make a short film spoof about the show. It would have Cathy saying that the teams had ten hours to build a car which they would have to drive to the store and get groceries. then the two teams would run into the junkyard and find two seeded running cars in ten minutes. Then jump right in them and drive off. The whole show could take 1 hour!

Rock crawling is a seperate discipline from off road racing. the points could be given rather like Trials motorcycling. Trials and Motocross are as different as off road racing and rockcrawling. Yawn same old thing? NOT!
