I'm guessing that the black cat was a symbol for the man's conscience. The cat was constantly haunting and bothering the man and so the man was constantly being reminded of how he brutally murdered his once beloved pet. In the end the cat once again lets out a meow and reminds the man (and the police) about how he murdered his wife.
