Where can I buy 'sturdy' work socks?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Iam looking for a source to buy quality work socks for my husband. He wears steel-toed boots and it seems like the white work socks we buy at the store just do not last too long. I would appreciate any ideas or even mail order sources for work socks that are made for "real workers." thanks, Laura

Army surpus is a good place to look. The military , while lacking in fashion , generally takes care of their feet.

My husband likes some that we get at Farm and Fleet.

Consider a wool/cotton blend. We get them new (and name brand) at a discount store (a locally named/owned one) for less than $2 a pair. They are seconds. Check your surplus and discount stores. Wool wears well and the cotton helps the absorbtion. Some lycra increases elasticity.

Hi laura I also wear steel toes and i hate them. But the rules say i have to so i do. Till i figured out to buy steel toes they eat my socks also. I went one size up in width to give me that little extra room. Because that steel will never bend or strech. But with out a doubt the best socks ive found are red wing socks. They last and hold up great. You can find them at your local redwing shoe store or thier web site i would guess. But the old saying is ture you get what you pay for, they are not cheap. And i ve tried all them cheap socks wal-mart k-mart ect... nothing compares to the redwing white work sock. And i'm a real woker ( power plant ) take care john h.

I usually do not recommend a store or cataloge but.

Have you ever tried Sportsmansguide.com ? We have gotten their mail catalogs for years and after spending literally thousands of dollars with them I can say that they have quality items at very low prices. They buy lots of closeout or overstocked items from companies and they also have items you can not find anywhere else.

Before I posted this I went to their website to see if they have socks available. Search under socks produced a lot of different ones. I even saw Mil.

My husband wears steel toe boots everyday, he bought them from this company. He says they are the most comfortable boots he has ever worn (more comfortable than his Red Wings). He even ordered a 2nd pair while they had them. His dress shoes and everyday shoes also come from SG. The pair of walking shoes I bought are so great I bought 2 more pair.

We have bought all sorts of things from them. I usually do a lot of my Christmas shopping with them, as a matter of fact I have already ordered binoculars (Simmons $14 ea) for the kids for Christmas, they should arrive any day. Last year I got all the kids sleeping bags (real, adult sized, insulated $20 ea) for Christmas. I was finished shopping by June.

As I said, we have bought many items from them, incuding a dog bed and the most beautiful Italian pasta bowls I have even seen (wish I had gotten another set before they sold out). I could go on but in short, check them out, you will not be sorry.
