Charlton Match thread

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Thought I'd start the match thread 3 1/2hrs early to test whether there's any alive out there, or whether a nuclear holocaust has really cleared everyone out. God, it's been deathly on here this weekend.

Is there anyone else out there?

Guess not! Oh well, sod it - I'm off to the Magpie room at SJP for my Sunday lunch - friend's Birthday do. Hopefully back here for 4pm to watch the game.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I will be availible to take your calls Mr Clark, after Celtic-Rangers, Ninety lads on site just itching to do a runner, have been warned that half day today, no more Sundays at double bubble - bliddy cruel

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Am here, but off for a bit to shower, get the Sunday paper, order the ppv, etc. Got the Celtic match on 5 Live. At least they don't block out Scottish football! Might try to stay logged on during the match, but may not type much other than at HT.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Hello lads 'n' lasses, aaall wi' smilin' faces (at present anyhoo). If the Screach appears, just in case he doesn't see my plea for help, please can you tell him I've e mailed him. I'm in a right predicament :( Anyway, enjoy the game. I'll be back with a match report soon.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Yoo Hoo its meeeeeeeeeeeee!

Will not be here for the game, I will be in the lounge making sure the video keeps working for min

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I'll be here, recovering from my week in Laahndaahn. Jeeeez it's bloody expensive in Engerlund now. Couldn't believe it. Numbers were the same, just have a pound sign in front instead of a dollar sign. But I had a blast and it was great to meet ITK, Bobby and Dan.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Whooooo Hooooooo, I'm here, there you go, that will clear the place out. Believe it or not I've got some work to do, but plan to have my meal break from 3.50 - 6.00 - so, in the words of the inimitable Arnie

I'll be BACK

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I may be here, I'll be watching the game, so if there's out to report I will.

TEAM:Junst announced on Sky Sport: Given, Barton, Macelino, Hughes, Quinn, Solano, Acuna, Speed, Ameobi, Dyer. Lee

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

It is 10.30 here in sunny, warm Florida. I have just ordered the game from Adelphia TV. I hope the result makes up for my disappointment last week, and for my last visit to ST James' when Charlton beat them 1-0. My vivid memory of Charlton was when in 1947 we were favorites even though in the Second Division. They hammered us 4-0. There was dissension in the team over the dropping of Charlie Wayman. That team which included Shacleton, Pearson and Bentley was disassembled and in the following season Milburn emerged as the centre forward. Now that really was a great Newcastle period -- promotion and three FA Cups and plenty of glorious goals.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

*yawn*

morning all from a wet and rainy Auckland. Good to see you back Floridian. Cheers for keeping the video warm, gus.

Now then:

"AH WENT TO BLAYDON RACES, TWAS ON THE 9TH JUNE..."

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

So let's hope we get hammered 4-0 then!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Morning from sunny and cold-again Baltimore. It was up to 70 degrees on Friday, now back to the winter coats. *sigh*. Ordered my ppv now trying to rid myself of a nagging headache. Wish I could say it was a hangover, but all I had to drink last night was a gigantic chocolate shake at Johnny Rockets.

Feeling very nervous about the match and just want it to get started. Give us something to shout about lads!!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

G'Day Min....can you please stop singing, we have had complaints from your neighbours about the noise.......yes the ones's on the other Island!

12 mins - Good x field ball by Quinn, knocked down into a danger area by Shola but no one on the ned of it.

We're giving the ball away to easy. they hit the post.

Come on lads !!!!!!

Get serious will ya

Bollocks... the little space bars fallen off me puta

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

another wasted corner. Nobby plays it flat along the line, and Acuna? couldn't get to it for the defender, then indicated that he wanted it about five foot off the line.......you'd think they'd practice these things sometime wouldn't you.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Ditto Hiro.

Fantastic save by Given and everytime we get the ball we give it away.Solano and Dyer have been erm dire. And Quinn is playing at Divison 1 speed. We need to get the ball and hold onto it for a while.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Durkin is playing some good advantage play, but it seems to be ancouraging Charlton to hang over the Toon players a bit.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

That corner was a bit better....reasonable delivery, cleared from the box,. General hammers it in, inadvertent flick on and nearly into the net. You need a bit of luck in these games.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Anyone listening to the fanzone commentating on Sky digital? Great stuff.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

This is depressing. Thesooner half time comes and YBR lays into them the better.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

First half report.............

Total and utter f@ckin shite!!!!!!!!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

that's even more depressing Kegsy - that its going to take YBR at HALF TIME to get into them. they can't organise themselves. shambolic. gutless.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

That was absolutely friggin awful.

The only consolation you can take is that Charlton were 2-0 up at half time on Wednesday night and the lost 4-2. Spurs played crap in the first half as well.

I know.....I know......pass that straw, it's a damn sight easioer than trying to grasp it!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

right.

half time. gutless. 2-0.

HOWEVER.

We're not beat yet. This is recoverable.

HEADS UP, STUCK IN, START PLAYING.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Gutless is the word. When we get the ball we give it away and then we don't seem to want it back. Ameobi just ducked under a ball before half time and the others are no better. I haven't seen a worse performance since the Southampton hiding from last year. This could easily turn in to a 4-0 drubbing.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Is Griffin injured ? who is on the bench ? O J Simpson`s lawyer could not help this lot

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

who'd want to be a fly on the wall in our locker room? never have I heard such absolute shite in my life....none deserve to wear the shirt today...

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Definitely shit performance by us. Quinne and Mercelino must be dropped in the second half in oder to avoid further conceding. No midfield, poor defence and no show for Dyer may conclude the first half. Bassedas for Lee, Griffin for Quinne...please .....!!! Very depressing performance...

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Sometimes I wonder if some of this squad are really interested.

I can't even say I am suprised

Good sides dont get no wins in 18 games

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

We don`t have the players to compete, sad but true , obvious from early doors in the season, talk about world wide exposure and market- ing , we cannot give the London Mags a boost never mind the Far East

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Helloe everybody. Half time report from my living room suggests Bobby is going to haf to do some stern talking in the changing room. He is looking blank on the touchline while Wadsworth looks bemused by it all. Given's distribution has been poor

Quinn is having a bad game and is not helping himself if he wants to get another game.

Marcellino is playing as poor as most of the rest but more worringly he is making Hughes look poor as well.

Barton has had a negative influence on both goals. His positional sense is crap and I seriously wonder why Robson keeps picking him. The only thing he has done to get applause is to try to get in a ruck with Svensson for no apparent reason. Shite.

Solano and Dyer are a bit absent but to be fair the midfield is just not keeping possession.

Charlton's crisper passing and drive in midfield is why they are winning this match quite comfortably.

If I was Robson I'd cancel the sunshine trip to La Manga because if they go on the trip they are taking the piss out of many fans who have paid money to watch this effort.

Come on lads pull your socks up, get organised, get the fucking ball on the deck and start to pass it around. Forget the pathetic humps upfield, no prizes for main culprit there.

We can still get something from this match, get one goal and Charlton will get worried. Howay the lads!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

If you'll pardon my Francais - that was UTTER SHITE!

I if was Bobby Robson it would simply a question of which three of those masquerading as Newcastle United to take off, with more than enough candidates.

No defence: nothing in midfield: in the circumstances Ameobi's done well. Dyer? Is he actually playing?

Solano, Barton and Marcelino have played like f*rts in a bottle. Lowlights? Solano & Marcelino's "challenges" on the first goal, and Barton's laying on of the second.

I've never seen another PL team who are quite as incapable of passing the ball 5 yds to their own man - we cannot retain possession, we cannot win the ball in the air, we are chasing shadows in midfield, we cannot even take a free-kick or a corner.

Total, utter shite!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Hi folks - I`m watching it on the television today, and we look just awful. (:o|

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I can handle defeat and have done many times.

But when I see a team play like a bunch of mammmsy pammsy feckin wimps who don't want to get injured in case it interferes with their golfing feckin holiday.

It really gives me the arse!!!!!!!!!

Get stuck in yer tw@ts.Play with a bit of pride!!!!!!!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Hi all

Ive been watching on Fox sports. Awful Just Awful. I hope bobby is giving them all a severe bollocking in the sheds.

I actually considered going back to bed at half time. Nah I cant do that!!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

If Dyer's face is anything to go by, looks like Bobby tore a few new holes at HT.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

@nd half underway. BATTLE!!!!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I AM SO DISGUSTED, AND WE ARE PAYING TO TAKE THIS BUNCH OF T***TS TO SPAIN. I ripped my season ticket up in a fit of rage luckily it was only the cover --- But i had to leave the house and drive to release some tension. That was the worst ive EVER seen a newcastle team play, and I include the early eightees in that.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

What are they twatting around at......for christ sake knocking it about in front of goal and the Given having to hit it into touch.....for christs sake./

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Why the f**k does Warren Barton run up the pitch he allways gices it away and leaves us stranded at the back. Leave the cockney tosser in London will yer Bobby.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

The 1st thing bobby should do is cancell the trip to Spain, I wouldnt take this lot of gutless overpaid shits to morpeth.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Dyer gets into the area just to the edge of the area, and without really challenging or pushing any Toon player, Charlton manage to force them back to the halfway line.

FUCKING HELL MAN - GET A FRIGGIN GRIP

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Get him off.!! Quick

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Any changes at ht - radio on the blink - gets any worse I will bell the good lady and tell that Heartbeat is a goer, why spoil two people`s entertainment by watching the tape

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

KB - are you sitting behind me in the stands? If you were then i'd tell you to keep yer mouth shut and start bloody singing. You're free to criticise AFTER but for now, a bit of FIGHT please...

Did anyone else on ppv just lose the broadcast?? ARRRRGGHH!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Gallacher on......Acuna off I think

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

If I was Min id tell you im entilitled to critisize such lack of commitment, After all they dont come and see me when Im bad...

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Whew..back on. Nice to Gallacher out. GO ON KEVIN!!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

You're the lucky one Ciara, the rest of us are still having to suffer it

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

fair enough. AFTERWARDS. but you're admitting defeat before the games even finished. It's not over til it's over, regardless of how spineless and shite we are.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

OK back in a few mins when its 4-0 to them.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

63 minutes and we have our first real chance. Rob Lee 30 yarder.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Not lucky when I'm paying $15 bucks for it. Though I should still demand a refund.....from our players!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

They won't be able to afford it once Bobby's slapped em with fines for being utterly shite

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Ameoboi almost scored. Come on

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

That unfortunatley is the problem Kegsy, there is no penalty for being shite. They still get paid, still go off on Holidays in the sun, they might get the bonus of staying home and staying warm for the next game, but they still get paid. If that were us at our jobs we would get the sack. No golden handshake, just a "Feck off useless b@st@rd"

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I don't know why any of us bother - some of us are sat watching this at 2am, 4am, 12 midnight all around the world. If you're not here to HOPE for a win, FIGHT for a win, why are you here? Maybe we're just as spineless as the players THIS AFTERNOON. See the point i'm making....?

TOON ARMY! Hear that on the webcast? They've still not given up HOPE.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

LOL, Kegsy

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Is it that bad folks ?, min in defence of kb, if we score 3 goals in the last ten mins, it does not wipe the slate clean in my eyes, players have a committment to give their all for 90 mins , and if I see WB at the end of the game hands above heed appauding the Toon Fans I shall Wallace and Gromit, if its as bad as made out, they need to slink off in disgust , stop playing on the Geordies good nature, Mandy got hoyed oot for less in my book

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Lede and Solano off.....Luax2 and Bassedas on......desperation or what!

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

and the first thing Bassedas does......amkes a fuck up of a high ball.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

What does Griffin have to do to get a game?

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Didn't have a choice Ken. 2-0 down, can't play for the draw can we, have to score 3 to win. As was already said, might as well lose 6-0 as 2-0, at least we might get some effort for the remainder of the game. That's my beef, not so much that we are shite today, but the players appear to be content being shite today.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Be the last man standing I reckon Ciara

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

and the worse part, what puniushment do they get for this game? A trip to Spain.

A trip to the salt mines would be more appropriate.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

no, i agree, slate not wiped clean, but if we score one goal. ONE goal, we're right back in it. It just seems people have admitted defeat before the game's finished. And that's as bad as not performing on the field IMHO. You can't begrudge the SQUAD a midwinter break after a season like we've had with injuries. And this ONE game. After the Leeds game no one would've begrudged them that. nor the Manu game. Have we got short memories or are we just ARROGANT enought to think we're bigger and better than lowly Charlton?

Anyway, this can wait til after....

in the meantime

TOON! TOON!

BLACK N WHITE ARMY

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Svensson and Barton having a lover's quarrel. Barton probably lucky not to get booked

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Griffin , agree Ciarra, probable excuse is lack of height at the back

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

injuries don't excuse the lack of heart and the gutless performance. It's not as if the players are shite, it's not like the days of McFaul, we have good players who are performing vastly below their best. And yes we a re bigger and better than Charlton and we need to win these games if we want to end up in Europe never mind the UEFA cup.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I thought Svenson was booked in the fuirst half for the spat with Barton, so how come he wasn't sent off?

Barton was booked for that handbags as well be the look.......suspended now if he was.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

better than Charlton Kegsy? We're 2-0 down! And we'll have lost TWICE to them this season....don't think so! :(

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Was he? Missed that. Can't remember who got the first half booking. I thought it was Svenson too

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

It was Parker booked in the first, tackle on Nobby.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Min, next you'll be saying Southampton are better than we are...

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

i'll reserve judgement til 3 March....;)

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Robson should give the tickets for the holiday to the fans and send those lot off to work for 2 weeks.

Min I admire your faith but there is no excuse for lack of committment.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

We have good quality individual players Kegsy, we have no team at all. Charlton have a lot of good journeymen players, yet they have a team . Thats all there is too it and management should be aware of it.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

:)

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

I think we have a team. We've performed as a team recently against the likes of Man U, Leeds x 2 yet we don't do it consistently. That should be what the management address the lack of consistency

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

yeah - no excuse - but that commitment goes for those ON the field and off as far as i'm concerned. How many on here would admit to walking out 10 minutes from the end at SJP? It seems to me, some of us walked out at half time. I'm as depressed and angry as anyone. But to deny them a winter break is daft. If it means they come back more organised, fresh, injury-free and with a better TEAM spirit then would you take it now? ;)

That's it full time a poor 2-0 at least tomorrow is a national holiday.

ABSOLUTE GUTLESS CRAP

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Spot on, Buff. Same old story, we've got plenty of good players, but they just can't seem to play as a TEAM consistently. Especially against teams that are equal to or below us. :-/

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Thanks ITK. I think we'd sussed that out. ;))

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

The annoying thing is they played like a bunch of blokes who were off on their holies the next day.

didn't give a stuff as long as they did't get hurt........................inf@ckinexcusable

'Some times its just too easy to say weve just had a bad day' - Off Metro Radio.I agree completely, dont get me wrong if I was there id be singing me nads off and seeth in silence. But Im not im here having to watch that dross on sky. Even with Al and Cort wed have lost that NO Commitment, Charlton for god sake are a Poor Poor side and theyve just gone ahead of us. Even though ive calmed down and glued my season ticket back together ,Im still disgusted, The whole team have let us the manager and Quinn down , cos on that performance id not sign him....

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

MIN they've Just had 10 days off man..... so when they get back after ANOTHER break will they be worse??

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

It's not the loss that bugs me. I can handle that if the lads put in genuine battling EFFORT. It's watching them run around like headless chickens without a clue that drive me crazy. It happens too often.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

well wasn't that the biggest pile of bollocks this side of lord knows what...I said it before and I'll say it again....it's time we got some quality out there, I don't care how... just anyone who wants to show some guts...

tis a sad day indeed....

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

It happens time and time again , we play well- even brilliantly so we know we can do it, Then just as the manager is getting things right, they inexplicable play like that - this caused KK to leave , cost RG his job and also KD, and if you ask me BR will think why the f*** should I try if you loosers wont.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Charlton were quite dreadful, and we were much worse. I ask myself how could the team of 4/5 years ago have been turned into what we have today. I saw better center backs at the Hirst park than Marcellino. Barton tries hard, but is really a major liability. We never attempted to get a hold in the midfield. We seemed to shirk every tackle and they won the ball almost at will. Thoroughly depressing. I hope the Southampton game is not on Pay per View. My worst day on the golf course was better than this 'entertainment.'

10 days in Newcastle training on a wet/cold/frozen pitch is hardly a holiday now is it? Charlton are hardly 'shite' if they've just gone ahead of us. Just in the same way that we're not world beaters because we beat Leeds. Agree with everything that's been said about commitment and guts and ciara's spot on about result not mattering if they've fought for it.

But, and i'll get probably get shot down for saying it, commitment goes BOTH ways - that's faith, belief, guts and fight. Most of us on here were beaten before the 2nd half got underway that's what i can't understand.

Send them to La Manga. Get them out of the NE for a week. It'll do them good AND I STILL think they've earned it. Not on today's performance but over the season as a whole.

flak jacket ready....

The question management should be forcing thro is `Why are we going on a break to La Manga`, is it a reward for your efforts, is it for better training facilities?, is it for the golf ?, or more importantly ` is it cos we failed to qualify for the next round of the Cup, One thing it is not is to boost team spirit, what a chestnut, lol at that, Rest assured the cliques will develop , can not see the South Amer/cans on the golf gourse, the 19th hole will get the hammer, cert

Thinking back my ex-mob used to develop team spirit in a different way, albeit in much smaller nos than the Toon Squad, just drop you off in the middle of Dartmoor, Highlands, the Ulu in Borneo, or in Norway, no food, no money , basic gear all for £16 per week. We had spirit burstin out of us , had to , your mates depended on you , thats why min I sometimes get annoyed at lack of committment, Back in the fifties they played their guts oot for pit yackers and shipyard caulkers who were the support, times change but the honour of wearing the black and white shirt should never be lowered., they are trying their dammdest to do it with performances like today

MIN . No-one is denying weve done exceptionally well considering the injuries etc.. However I DEMAND 100% of every player in every game , If just 1 player is giving any less than they should not be wearing B&W. IMHO today they let the London hoodoo play on their minds and gave up B4 they started. Critisizing on here during a match has no bearing on the game its not as if Barton looks at his Wap Phone and checks out the forum in 10 Min intervals, although on his performance today he may! If I performed like that at work id have a written warning and id wave goodbye to my bonus, Our lads howver get a weeks golf at la manga . Where is the incentive for these overpaid primadoners.

i'm not diagreeing. i haven't seen it and will have to wait til i do but we're dealing with athletes on the one hand and much as i'd LOVE to stick today's 11 onto Dartmoor in a blizzard with 40 kilo backpacks, it's not going to happen.

I'd have thought we'd seen worse under Mssrs Dalglish, McGarry, Lee mind..

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

You lot should look on the bright side - at least it didn't cost you $14.95 plus tax to watch that crap on television. With the exception of Given, and perhaps Hughes and Ameobi, I can't think of anybody who even looked like a Premier League player. Dyer looked like the walking dead for most of the match.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Ive got to be honest Min , ive seen very little worse than that without doubt it was the most lacklustre performance ive sen since the Mckeag days.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

KB - ONE performance. One. maybe one other that gutless all season. One too many, i agree but as i said before, if Spain had been booked after the Leeds game or Man U would anyone be denying them it now? There's a bigger picture, that's all.

Glad to see the BBS has got some of its TEETH back though! Now we're really rocking...;))

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

>worst performance since the McKeag days...

right, now i'm getting a clearer picture....THAT bad eh?

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Bless you for staying so optimistic, Min. But they're getting paid to show committment. We're paying to watch them. As a consumer, if you don't get value for money, you complain. Anyway, those who aren't commited wouldn't still be at their seats when the final whistle blows, or sitting by their radios/tvs/computers even after the final whistle blows. I can only speak for myself, but there's always some small bit of hope, but watching the crap on display today severely tests it! I just find this so much more frustrating because there doesn't seem to be an easy and obvious answer.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Min just watch it on MOTD , But be warned dont have any hard objects near to hand for fear of seeing them implode into the tv.

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

MOTD - a luxury i don't have out here.

Tuesday night on Sky for me. I'll have a pint in me hand so watch out for flying glass...

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

Just thinking about this Spain trip. Bobby could easily call in their free golf time and put them to training all week. Considering how they've had such problems with frozen pitches at CLS, they could really take advantage of La Manga's beautiful, non-frozen pitches and warm weather. FULL advantage.

Holiday in the sun.......heh. >;-)

-- Anonymous, February 11, 2001

that's what makes it even worse. at least in the 'bad old days' it was obvious the reason why we were crap and it was obvious the trouble permeated from the boardroom down.

Now, it's different but it comes back to what i said a while back. The players THINK they're better than they are. A friend of mine from Whickham met Gary Apeed on holiday in Cyprus a few years back when KD was in charge. It was the pre-season before he was sacked. She asked him what the problem was after finishing 13th and what was going to happen the coming season and Speed said: "Ah, we'll be alright." Now THAT says it all for me.

Look, there will be some hardship for them - they won't be seeing their Missuses on Valentine's Day.... Just got back to the office. We were appalling. I actually left about 5 mins early but only because I've got something of a personal crisis going on and I had to get back to try to contact people who may be able to help.
