BPA asks Navy to use backup generators The Associated Press 2/9/01 11:03 PM

BREMERTON, Wash. (AP) -- The Bonneville Power Administration is asking the Navy to use backup generators to produce some of its own electricity to free up power for others in the Northwest.

"We're just looking for some short-term solutions to what we're seeing as an energy crisis right now," said Kristen Watts, a power account executive for BPA.

The Navy is considering using one generator at the Naval Submarine Base Bangor and two at the Naval Station Bremerton, said Lt. Kim Marks, spokeswoman for the Navy Region Northwest.

"We're trying to iron out the details -- how much it would cost, environmental permits we would need, all those details," he said.

The generators could produce about 7,392 megawatt hours, which is enough electricity to power about 4,000 homes.

The Navy would have to follow certain regulations because diesel generation can cause long-term environmental damage, Watts said.

This is EXACTLY the situation that that 1950's law is designed to PREVENT. Instead of perverting that particular law (well, EXPANDING the envelope a LITTLE bit I guess) it should be there to see that this isn't needed.
