Motorola to cut up to 4,000 semiconductor jobs

CHICAGO, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Wireless technology firm Motorola Inc. (NYSE:MOT -news) said Friday it was cutting up to 4,000 jobs in its semiconductor unit as a result of a slowing semiconductor market.

The company, which employs 130,000 people worldwide, said the job cuts are part of a cost-reduction plan that began in the fourth quarter.

The job cuts will be achieved by ending the assignments of contract and temporary employees, attrition, and both voluntary and involuntary severance programs, the company said.

The move comes on the heels of an announcement by its mobile phone unit that it was closing its last mobile phone manufacturing plant in the U.S. and cutting 2,500 jobs in a move to stay competitive.

Other measures will include a substantial reduction in capital spending and operating budgets and further business and manufacturing consolidations, the company's semiconductor unit said.
