highest quality CD-Roms

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Sorry, this question does stray a little of topic. I need to create the highest possible quality CD (video) that will play in a CD-Rom only. The clip is about 30 minutes maximum. Is my best bet to go with a Video Cd using white book specs or should I do something different. Compatibility is also very important. It has to play in a range of CD-Roms, both Mac and PC, etc. Thanks!

this will help you a bit. if your doing a PC/mac only vcd type rom. and want the highest quality you can fit on a disc (lets use 80 mins). you can do an xvcd (vcd specs with a higher bitrate) and you can fit a vcd with a bitrate of 2500 on a 74min cdr for 30 mins (believe 33mins is the max). For an 80 min cd you could probably boost it up to 2600. But 2500bitrate is techinacally the highest rate you can go to fit 30mins on a 74min cdr. Now i have no idea as to whether or not a mac will play it. thats where im in the dark

Probably be better to do an SVCD instead of VCD. SVCD has better resolution than VCD and generally better quality overall. I think there are Mac players that play them, and deffinitely PC players. Plus they play in alot of DVD players, whereas XVCD cant be played in all VCD compatible players. Apex DVD players play them and they are cheap.
