Woman Sentenced for Hiding Dead Man in Freezer

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A woman who kept her dead roommate in a freezer for about a year while she spent his money has been sentenced to a year in prison. Wynema Faye Shumate, 66, pleaded guilty Tuesday to fraud and unlawful removal of a dead body and was also given 18 months of probation.

Police found the body of James H. O'Neil, 70, last February in a freezer in the garage of the home he shared with Shumate. An autopsy determined O'Neil had died of natural causes.

Defense attorney Ashley Pennington said his client was afraid of being destitute.
