Quick poll: banners

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Assuming LR is right that you can buy fireproof banners and the club accept my argument, what shall I get put on it? I think stuff like "Newcastle United - the religion" is cheesy. I do quite like stuff like "Free the People's Republic of Northumbria", "Black and white 'til we die" ETC. Ideas?

Two words - Save Chip

True although we want loads of people to get banners...

I still think the best, by a very long way, was that flag. Immense. Must have helped scare the shot (?) out of the opposition.

BTW - I seem to remember a flag which appeared on the east wall of the SJH stand. Can't remember whether it was just a cup match or other games as well.

I am right Douggie. I can put you in touch with our banner man, Charlie Walton...he'll put you on the right trail.

BTW....it's MUFC, The Religion, not NUFC :-)

Isn't the abreviation NUFC copyright maerial? The club would never allow it.

NUFC - Anything Else Is Just S**te

LR,

if MUFC is a religion the high priests want to turn it into the moonies.

DOUGAL, what ever you do, PLEASE, PLEASE (dont promote the illusion that Northumbria is mags and Co Durham is mackems) dont put 'Free the People's Republic of Northumbria.' In essance you are ignoring and strangling the toons supporter base in Co Durham, Gateshead and South Tyneside, by exclusion.

Why have one lot when you can have two.

What is Northumbria? Newcastle, North Tyneside and a few inbred farmers? Do you want to help our crowds to shrink to a Derby County, or do you want them stayiin number two to Man Utd?

Did you know that Northumbria is 1/3 the size of Co Duhram, South Tyneside and Gateshead in population (which the S/Sun editor knows, but still gives the back page headline to the mackems in these 'definate NUFC strong holds,' ensuring that future generations see Sunderland as the primary main important club, NOT Tow Law Town, not Gateshead NOT NEWCASTLE. And ensuring the national media will eventually see this too. BUT THIS IS ANOTHER MATTER EH!).

How about 'FREEDOM FOR THE GEORDIE NATION,' or 'FREEDOM FOR THE UNITED STATES OF NEWCASTLE!'

IN FACT HOW ABOUT THE BANNER ' THE UNITED STATES OF NEWCASTLE - CO DURHAM, SOUTH TYNESIDE, GATESHEAD, NORTHUMBRIA' etc.

Give Bob Murray and the editor of the calculating Sunday Sun a real headache eh?

Are you sure you aren't talking about Northumberland? I am talking about the ancient Kingdom of Northumbria. I come from County Durham so you won't find me being too snooty about Mags from anywhere South of the Tyne.

How man, yer taakin' a load of cods. Northumbria isn't Northumberland, it is the greater area, taking in most of the places you mentioned.

If you divvent believe iz, Tek a shufty

I'd be quite happy with The People's Republic of Northumbria as long as it had (....excluding The Mackems) in little letters underneath ;-)

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2001

Aye but the idea of 'Northumbria' is too ambiguous. Not every one born in the last 2 centuaries thinks like this. We dont want people associating Co Durham, South Tyne with the mackems and the less populated modern times Northumbria with the mags. That could have bad consequences say in thirty years time or something etc.

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2001

How about F**K THE MACKEMS in massiv big letters.

Failing that, a simple Newcastle United is the best option.

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2001

Me mate Chips is right Screacher, Dougal et al, it is a touch ambiguous. But what ever you put, you must include a lot of places (perhaps in small fonts) that could end any chance little chance of ambiguity and clever calculating spin.

The publicity of a big flag come back, is to good to get wrong like.

I think Chips and co where trying to say lets mark wor territary clearly;)

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2001

Clearly the concept of "The Greater Northumbria" is far too difficult for The Paperboy, Chips and Dog P!$$. In that case Dougal, Aah sujjest ye tek ya idea ti' the Platty Club. Aah'm shua them toff wi' theor wads wad understand lyuk.

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2001

There are some boring baskets on here. What do ya mean JUST NUFC??..that's cak. Feck me, I thought the unoriginality in yer songs was just a one-off :-)

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2001

We should use our native language: HAWAY THE LADS it may be old fashioned - but I like it!

-- Anonymous, February 08, 2001

"This is a banner"

I'm a bit of a stickler for accuracy meself. At a push I could accept "Black & White Banner" ( just as long as the colours were correct...mutter...mutter...scratch)

Someone in the crowd at a WWF game held up a placard saying "I Forgot My Sign"

It amused me, anyway...

Thay go in for banners in France as well. I saw two great banners at the PSG -Auxerre game on Saturday (0-4 at home in the French Cup!). One had "PSG - The Benny Hill of Football", and the other had "PSG on the web - www.clubdemerde.fr".

On another note, Auxerre's 19 year old forward Djibril Cissé ripped PSG to bits. He is incredibly fast, strong, with loads of skill. He scored two great goals and nutmegged a defender to set up another. Wor lass even said "why don't Newcastle sign him?" He also scored the winner in the European U18 final last summer. His stats are:

Age: 19 ans Birthdate: 12 August 1981 Birthplace: Arles Height: 1.83 m (6 foot) Weight: 78 kg (12 stone 4 lb)

Season 00/01 stats Games (sub) goals League 7(9) 6 Cups 5(2) 5

He probably wouldn't cost too much. Although he is French!
