Idea: Electromagnets

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I have a great idea for a new challenge. The two teams could compete to build an electric generator to power an electromagnet. The winning team would pick up the most weight in scrap metal or something to this effect. The generator could be either man powered or powered by a motor.

Would the magnet be provided to them or do they have to build it?

That answer is quite simple. Build it and they will cling..... there are a few ways to build magnets and I think it would be a great challenge. Just building the generator wouldn't take that long.4-5 hours tops.......

I think that's a great idea. The generator would be of simple means. After all some basic laws of either physics and including OHM's law. They could design and biuld it any way they want. The object is: who can lift the most weight for a specified time. the mahnet itself is of simple construction, a simple form of crane for lifting. Height is not an issue as it just has to be off the ground, say 6 inches of clearance.

Excellant idea
