I ordered my seeds today! C'mon Spring!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm so excited! I've never started my own seeds before. I've only dabbled with already started plants from the nursery. Since it was only in small amounts it didn't matter. This year I am expanding by putting in 6 more raised beds. Most of what I ordered are heirloom seeds so that I can save my own seed.

Does anyone have any favorite heirloom varieties they would like to share or any experiences good or bad with heirlooms? How about some tried and true seed starting tips from experience?

I am so looking forward to Spring! The hills are alive with the sound of music... twirl, twirl, twirl. I guess Nan's cheerfulness is contagious!

Compliments will get you anywhere, but don't tell my husband:~) !!! snicker snicker! I always put plastic wrap over my pots to help them germinate. I also like to save okra seeds every year. I got some from a friend of my husbands. Don't know what it is but it is short and very productive. It starts producing before it is very tall at all! I also love to save pumpkin and cushaw seeds, squash and sweet potatoes(I save some of the big ones for making my own slips) You are going to love saving seeds! Just mark them clearly when the time comes, I got some weird football shaped things last year in the pumpkin patch and I asked all of the neighbors that happened by to check it out. Hasn't been identified yet. Looked like a yellow bumpy football. Best we figgered is that it was some type of hubbard?! and Diane, if the hills are alive with the sound of music you must live on the other side of the holler from us.....my boys are singing at the top of their lungs to a tape of christian choruses!!! Woooo, make a joyful NOISE I guess!!!

Maybe those bumpy funny thing in your garden are the result of some goofy pollination. My MIL had that happen and we never figure out what crossed...pumkin-watermelon-squash-whatever. Hey Nan, was the Honey BBQ chicken good??

We have corresponded before, although I suspect it was your husband at the keyboard in previous missives! Anyway, I am an incurable nutso when it comes to heirloom seeds, and in particular, tomatoes. What do you want? I have maybe 40 heirlooms, and only ask the cost of the stamp. If you would like a list, please e-mail directly. Same info for lurkers, but be aware that my supply is finite. GL to all!

Feb. 4,2001,,,,salad greens seeds into the plug trays. Feb.7,2001.. about 200 little seedlings spring forth. Is this magic or what? About two weeks and into the ground they go. I'm beginning to think these robins and red wing blackbirds know what they are talking about.

Duh! I am so goofy, I just called Denise, Diane. I am so sorry. I have trouble with all of those names that start with the same letters. Please forgive me! and I was going to say that I saved some spaghetti squash seeds from last year. If you want some I can figure out how to get them to you if you e-mail me your address. I bet that I have some of those surprise squash seeds too. HeeHee!

I just got my first order yesterday . Two open pollinated tomato varieties. Brad, what do you have?? I have tried Caspian Pink and Brandywine and was unimpressed. This year I am trying Mystery Keeper and Latah, and Old Brook. (haven't placed the Old Brook order yet) I saved pea and bean seed last year (Homesteader and Black Valentine) and this Sturday is Halifax's Seedy Saturday so I hope to buy and trade seeds there too. Wheee!!
