I don't see any mention of this on here. I realize that nobody gives a rat's ass but I think it merits at least a New Question. Shame really, Newcastle's blank & white and Yankee pinstripes are a much better fit.

How about Boston Celtic Celtics?

Well I'm really brassed off about this!
I've supported the Yankees (and Am footy's Giants) since moving to NY State in 1980, even though we moved back to the Golden City as long ago as 1988.
As PeteT suggests, the Yankees pin-stripes would have been a reasonable fit with our b&w stripes, but I'm going to have to change my baseball allegiance now - can't be associated with manure in any way shape or form I'm afraid.

So it's already had a negative affect....hahaha :))

I hate to say this but success breeds success, the yankees and Manure deserve one another. After all everyone hates the yankees anyway.

THe toon would be much better suited to the Chicago Cubs, always underachieving, yet they play infront of a full house every game. Lots of people want the cubs to be succesfull (like Newcastle) except no one believes they ever will be.

Let us hope the union will bring an end to this winning nonsense, for both sides. Enough I say, enough!

Good luck to the Cubs, hey Syme, there was some news about Magglio Ordonez not too long ago, did he sign a long term megabucks contract?

What pisses me off is how the Newton Heath marketing team always seem 3 steps ahead of the toons and one step ahead of every one else!

The New York Lankys

ho ho ho.... hat, coat....

They could team up with the Dallas Cowgirls and go for a big three most hated consortium. ;-)

Pete, I don't see the sox letting him go, I haven't spoken to him for a while, I haven't heard anything to the contrary so I assume all is well. He plays in Venezuala during the offseason, and besides him and Naina (his wife) have just bought a hooose in Florida.

One analyst has commented that this will almost certainly signify the end of Man Utd's involvement in the PL...probably within 3 years.

I thought the Yankees were navy blue and white?

Anyway I am a Mets man.

Chicago definately play in B & W

Oh - I thought it was checks. Sorry.

The Stankees and ManUre. If ever two corporate entities deserved each other, it is these two. Same absolute arrogance, same overwhelming domination, same belief that the rules that everybody has to operate under don't apply to them. A Plague on them both.

Newcastle are ready to fight Premiership rivals Manchester United all the way for their share of the lucrative North American merchandising market following yesterday's announcement that Old Trafford bosses have struck a multi-million pound deal with the New York Yankees baseball team. The Magpies are already planning a return trip to the States this summer following last year's successful link-up with Washington's DC United and Columbus Crew and there is no doubt that Freddie Shepherd and his board feel the club can benefit from increasing its profile abroad.

Global interest in football has never been greater but North America and Asia represent the fastest-growing markets, and with Bobby Robson's blessing Newcastle will tour the Far East or the USA as part of their build-up to the 2001-02 campaign.

However, the United States represents a merchandising goldmine and that is one reason why Manchester United opted to throw their hat into the ring alongside the Yankees, the New Jersey Devils ice hockey team and NBA outfit the New Jersey Nets.

Although the reigning Premiership champions will be forced to forego a slice

of their profits they will be backed by a marketing operation second to none on the other side of the Atlantic.

Newcastle are by no means close to clinching a similar deal but the club is considering the best way forward to launch its own renewed assault on the world market.

The Magpies have always commanded an impressive share of the domestic market in terms of shirt sales and associated merchandise but they are still minnows in terms of turnover on the world stage.

Last summer's tour - which took in fixtures against two of the Major Soccer League's biggest names - laid the foundations for a fresh strategy aimed at eating away at Manchester United's worldwide dominance.

However, there is no doubt that yesterday's agreement is another example of the 1999 European Cup winners' ability to pre-empt such commercial strikes with their own constantly evolving business blueprint.

In terms of overseas sales, Manchester United already dominate the markets in Asia, South America, North America and Australia.

Newcastle's 1996 tour of the Far East hinted at the potential for financial gain in that part of the world, but a gruelling schedule and the arid climate took its toll on Kevin Keegan's squad and several players were still recovering from the effects of the summer trip well into the following season.

South America is another market that St James's Park chiefs feel the club could corner and, thanks to Nolberto Solano, Newcastle is already the best-supported European team in Peru after Real Madrid.

With several Argentinians, a Chilean and a Paraguayan in the current first team squad there would be no problem promoting United in South America. But tours would be a logistical headache and the market for merchandising is unknown.

Although United intend to explore Asia again in the future - and a less hectic tour than 1996 could still play a part in the 2001 pre- season programme - there is no doubt that the players and coaching staff would prefer to renew their acquaintance with a very receptive American public.

A tour of the West Coast has been mooted - possibly taking in the Canadian city of Vancouver - and the facilities on offer are first class.

United's new marketing manager Carol Beverley, formerly with sportswear firm adidas, helped organise Newcastle's 2000 tour and it would be no surprise if she was at the forefront of plans to return to the USA this summer.

Manchester United meanwhile insisted they will remain loyal to their roots after announcing the deal with the Yankees.

Chief executive Peter Kenyon rejected suggestions that the club was likely to lead a drive to form a breakaway superleague.

Sure...I move to DC...and they'll go to the West Coast this year.

I AM SO THERE!!!! I love Vancouver anyhow and this would be a perfect excuse to go back! Off to make my reservation at Death By Chocolate. :-)))

Today's Ronnie says we have gone back to discussions to buy Melbourne Carlton and we are looking at a NH-type link (not an amino bond)with Lamar Hunt who owns Columbus Crew, Kansas Chiefs and some of Texas Rangers (Baseball not the cowboy police). Over to you Ciara for the lowdown.

Don't really know anything about baseball other than the names of the teams and the fact that sports fans in every city on the East coast outside NYC seems to love chanting "Yankees Suck!". Haven't followed American football that closely so not sure what's going on with the Chiefs. Columbus Crew are one of the best MLS clubs, excellent facilities. None of the mentioned teams are overly hyped, but people know the names. The supporters in the Columbus area are very enthusiastic about the game and turn out in huge numbers. Our friendly there last summer was nearly a sold-out. The 5,000 seats that didn't go to "the soccer community" for the US v Mexico WCQ sold out the day they went on sale to the general public. The stadium even added over 1,000 seats for that match. And it takes place on Feb 28....hardly the warmest time of year in Ohio.

It would probably be a good move in terms of getting NUFC known beyond the major East/West coast cities. KC and Dallas also have MLS franchises so there's an eager soccer audience out there.

I see Freddie Shepherd and Lamar Hunt as being natural partners in crime. Wasn't it Hunt and his family who tried to buy up all the silver in the world to try and control the price. "Silverthumb"

From the Shields Gazette 8/2/01

NEWCASTLE United chairman Freddy Shepherd has vowed the Magpies will not be left behind by Manchester United in the commercial stakes.

The Red Devils' groundbreaking partnership with American baseball giants New York Yankees is set to swell the Old Trafford coffers even further. But Shepherd is adamant Newcastle won't sit back and watch idly as the Premiership champions continue to raise their profile worldwide. For Newcastle are:

Re-opening talks with Australian club Melbourne Carlton over a possible takeover.

Planning an end-of-season tour of the Far East.

Holding discussions with American billionaire Lamar Hunt, who owns the Columbus Crew football team and Kansas Chiefs baseball outfit. Shepherd said: "Manchester United have certainly hit the headlines this week with the New York Yankees deal, but I can assure our fans that we have not been sitting back. "We have stuff in the pipeline all over the world, and hopefully we can pull off some deals which will be of a massive benefit to Newcastle United and our fans. "We spent three days in Australia just before Christmas in our bid to buy Melbourne Carlton, and while negotiations broke down we are talking to them again. "We are also expecting to go back to the Far East for another tour at the end of the season. "Our last trip out there was a huge success, and we are still actually feeling the benefit of it almost five years later. "And as far as America is concerned, we are talking all the time to Lamar Hunt, who is one of the biggest sports entrepreneurs in the States." Shepherd and manager Bobby Robson first met Hunt during the Magpies pre-season trip to the States, which included a 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew. And Shepherd added: "Both Bobby and I struck up an immediate rapport with Lamar, and we are looking at ways in which we can help each other. "Apart from Columbus Crew, Lamar also owns Kansas Chiefs baseball team. "And he also has a connection with the Texas Rangers baseball team, who have just given their star player Ivan Rodriguez a ten-year deal worth 250 million dollars."
