I planted my garlic upside down--now what?!?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I planted about 30 blubs in late October (in Iowa), and in late November I realized that I probably put them in wrong. I'm not looking for theories, but if you've actually gone through this before, what do I do? Do I start over again in the spring, or will I actually get something from these?

Thanks for laughing WITH me!

How about Upside Down Garlic Bread!! Isn't that how they came up with Upside Down Pineapple Cake?

Can't you dig em up and flip them around. I did that with some flower bulbs once and they came up but kinda leaned a bit. Guess it wouldn't matter with garlic. Mine reseeds itself when I don't dig it all up and some of it is on it's side. Don't know about completely upside down though?

If you really have your heart set ona good harvest, I'd replant. I plant those little top sets by broadcasting them thickly and covering them, a lot of them don't come up. I think it's because I don't set them all right side up, but they are so tiny! If you replant, you can compare harvests from the two beds and see just how much it matters.

My experience has been that it will take a little longer but it will grow the same- I wouldn't replant in the spring as it won't mature in time. Think of it as an experiment....... and yes you will get garlic from these.

Don't worry, Mother Nature and gravity will correct the problem. May take a little longer to break surface and there will be a cute little hook at the bottom, nothing worse.

Thanks for the advice! I'll keep 'em in and maybe plant some more this spring just in case.

I'm with Jay. They will take a bit longer, but will do just fine. They may, however, be a tad disrespectful! GL!
