EVERTON SIGN TOP DEFENDER

Only last month Newcastle's manager Bobby Robson was set to sign Tenerife's Argentinean defender Pablo Paz, only for the board of directors to decide not top pay the £1.2 that Tenerife were demanding with the uncertainty of the future of the transfer market.

Well Robson's bad luck is Walter Smith's good at Everton, as he is now set to land Paz on loan until the end of the season. Paz is a top draw defender and will give Smith more strength at the back, he has a legitimate European Union passport and great international pedigree while his signing will not eat into his meagre transfer funds.

At only 5' 10" he is surprisingly good in the air and ferocious in the tackle but the 28-year-old has fallen out with the management at Tenerife and both parties are keen for him to leave.

I can't believe we were that keen - perhaps his height put us off. Otherwise, I'm sure we'd have tried for a loaner. On the otherhand, maybe Tenerife are desperate to get rid and weren't entertaining a loaner at the time. Still as the Spanish and French windows (fenetres?) are now closed, we're stuck with /strike> luck to have Marcelino and Goma (when fit). Anybody knaa what Dazza Peacock's doing these days?

he retired through injury. So he should fit back in nicely.
