greenspun.com : LUSENET : The Work of Edgar Allan Poe : One Thread

A newspaper article I read in the early to mid 70"s eluded to a type of disease that could be responsible for some of Poe"s actions, even his death. The disease was not "known" until 1969 and I believe it begins with a "p". Do you have any information on this? Respectfuly, Bob & Gail Jewson

I regret to inform you that the cause of death was NEVER established for Edgar Allan Poe. Despite popular beliefs, no one can be sure. The most widely accepted cause is in fact, of all things, rabies (ironic becuase of his love for cats). I am sorry to not be able to tell you what the article may have claimed killed him, but no one really knows. P A Regan

Things Poe Most likely had

Manic-depressive illness: when some one can go threw what is called mania (being happy or content) and then extream depretion Poe was nice to Virginia and his aunt but angry with every one else, this would also be called Bipolar

Psychosis- loss of contact with reality, delusins, antisocial. Manic depresstion is a form of pychosis. this showed up more toward the end of his life

Schizophrenia-withdraw, bizarre behaveior, inappropriate emotional responses, some times loss of reality
