Green cherry tomatoes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I ordered some green cherry tomato seeds, just for fun. My question is, how do I know when they're ripe?

Hi Ardie,

I've grown green tomatoes in the past and this may sound strange but it isn't hard to tell when they are ripe. With the Aunt Ruby's German Greens (not a cherry tom) they get a bit of a yellow tint to them and they become a bit more soft. They will also be easy to pick when they are ripe.

I think because color is so obvious we think that is the only way to tell when a fruit is ripe but there are lots of other subtle clues. Good luck with your toms.

We lived in WI until last year, I'm in Arkansas now and just started 240 tom seeds yesterday! Kim

Any tomato I have ever grow begins to separate from the stem when it is ripe. That's what I would look for.
