Jacko's brilliant birthday present has got me thinking.

My Dad is 67 in May and retires in August of this year. He's a Methodist Minister and has been for the last 40 years in various places around the country but specifically in Newcastle and Cramlington. He was born in Byker and has followed Newcastle since he can remember his dad taking him just after the war. He tells me YBRs mam and dad were staunch methodists as well ;)). It's also my mam and dad's Ruby Wedding anniversary in June. I want to arrange something really special. I'm sure the club get requests like this all the time but does anyone:

a/ have any fantastic ideas; and

b/ any suggestions as to how i could get something like the letter/certificate from the club, short of just writing to them and hoping?

cheers....

Sorry I've no ideas on this Min but your piece got me thinking.

During the 1950's I attended a Sunday School at the Methodist Chapel at the end of my road (Northcott Gdns, Seghill, close to Cramlington). I just wondered if your Dad might know anything about it. The minister was a Mr Storey. I was something of a star pupil at the time, usually singing a solo at the Anniversary as well as doing a recitation. My enthusiasm for the place was due to the first love of my life, the young lady who took the infants class on a Sunday morning, name of Eva I think.

I loved her so much that I can still remember the feeling on a Sunday night. Sunday school was over, the warm glow of her company (I think she knew I was crazy about her!) that morning had faded, and it was now a whole week before I would see her again. I felt a dull ache inside me that would bring me near to tears. (Is this normal for a 5- y-o?)

The chapel closed around 1960ish. I can recall the last day I attended, and the sad face of old Mr Storey as he locked the building for the last time, another event which brought me near to tears - (I've always been far too sensitive for my own good). The building then became an industrial unit for a time but has now been completely replaced by a quite impressive residential house.

Anyway, Min, any info that your Dad might have on the place, how I could research it's history, how I could find what became of Mr Storey etc would be very interesting. As for Eva, I guess she must be about 65 or more now so I doubt if she would have quite the same effect on me that she had back then, so I'll just leave that one as a delightful memory. :-)

Quite normal for a 5 yr old Jonno - but how did you manage to stay in that infant class when you're voice broke?

Min,

If I was you I would just write to Bobby Robson directly well ahead of time.

Jonno - email despatched forthwith to said parent. bit of a long shot and i suspect it's [slightly] before his time but you never know...

cheers clarky - i'll get onto it ASAP and [hopefully] come up with something special...i know it would mean a lot to him.

cheers again. and if mr shepherd and mr hall or mr cushing or mr stonehouse are out there - please take good care of this letter that you're going to receive!

I had an idea once min.

Damned if I can remember what it was though!

Someone also told me that I did not have a clue, they must have been right as I did not even know that there was a riddle!
