Individual uses of VideoCD's

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Just an open question and informal poll.

Subject matter: What types of video's are folks putting on their VideoCD, old 8mm home movies, new home videos, creative content (home made animations or video shorts), tv shows/movies for later replay, backup copies of stamped VCD or DVD, commercial, etc.

Distribution: Personal use, family, friends, commercial.

Has anyone distributed creative content via iFilms.com, etc.?

I am begining in this technology. For now I am putting most of my anime collection from VHS to VCD. I am also a film student and I'm doing experiences with better resolution media, such as SVCD and mini DVD.

I personally use the VCD photo album (i.e with or without music) almost exclusively. In my experience, putting any type of video other than DVD onto VCD is a waste of time, cause the quality will always be poor, and then 2 yrs down the line they will have some way of doing it with better quality and people will have wasted countless hours at this. If you take high rez stills, and put them to photo disk, the quality is always good. I've even experimented with some very high rez stills and the quality gets much better - always depends on the source material, so this format is really best for archiving photos of anything.

The captures I've done off of VHS are, admittedly, of poor quality when played on the home entertainment setup, as are the source. Captures off of the dish, though have been excellent. I find that animated material off of the dish is forgiving of MPG1, That I attribute to minimal back ground movement of the scenes being captured.

I find that the convience of VCD far out weighs any quality loss when dealing with my collection of 50 year old family 8mm film and newer video camera material. Since I am the only family member in posession of the family archive, I finally came up with a way to share the memories with out giving up possession of the source. By the way, I opted not to put music to the film leaving the audio track empty. I figured that my taste in Rock music wouldn't be appreciated by the 'Guy Lombardo' and 'Country' family members.

I've also recently started doing animated shorts on my PC where the quality is under my total control.

I would have to say either I am or aspire to all of the choices you mentioned. Good thought and I like what others have to say.

I personally use them in the science center I work at as a cost effective alternative for looped video content in kiosks. Have to admit that I'll likely be switching out to DVDs now that Apple has lowered the bar on authoring costs though.
