Wayne Quinn

O.K. I know it's late an all, but I only just got and watched a copy of the game. (thanx Gus).

Now I know it's from watching the game on video, which is different from being there, but I thought Quinn had a really good game.

He defended pretty well, got forward when needed too etc. and has a good left foot which he used to put over some lovely crosses.

But what really struck me is that he didn't leave the left wing exposed as WB is prone to do on the right. Which is what really frustrates me some times. WB leaving his wing exposed alot that is.

Now I don't know if this performance was idicitive of all his games but I think he'd be a decent buy.

And I know one game doesn't make a good player.

I saw him in the Cov City game and he played well: he's athletic and big and strong, he can tackle, he can cross a lovely ball. I got favourable first impressions and I like his willingness. The lad wants to play for us.
Sunday is the biggest game of his career - go on son!

Furthermore Warren is a terrrrrible on the left

Quinn, by his own admission, isn't a good defender and says his game is more about getting crosses in after forward forays.

Sounds ideal!

I thought he defended well against Coventry when our defence & midfield units collectively defended terribly. In fact, I thought he was our best defender, and in addition got forward to good effect at times hitting in a couple of good crosses. He seemed like an intelligent player - something we don't have in abundance - who judged his forward runs carefully.

Watching the Leeds game on TV, he didn't look quite as good. However, he was left horribly exposed on numerous occasions by the absence of a disciplined left-sided m/f player, and wasn't able to get forward very much - although he was involved in our 3rd goal.

From reports I've read of the Chelsea game, we were exposed down both flanks which lead me to assume that Quinn must have blown it. However, reading what you and Gus have said after watching the video, it sounds to me as it may have been the Leeds scenario all over again.

One thing's for certain - we desperately need a good LB.

Isn't it about time we signed Roberto Carlos?
:-)

Yeh we've kept Carlos hanging on for far too long now and it's not fair to make him wait any longer, let him realsie his dream of playing in front of the Toon.

Damn the Spanish transfer window has closed does that mean we can't sign him?

Nah we can't sign a lad who's name sounds very close to Wayne King....

Quinn looked OK, but I reckon he needs a few more games so that we can judge him better. Luckily a few more games is what we have as he is on a 5 week loan, he'll play in the s/ton, and Charton games.

...........assuming he doesn't get injured in training the morra Rik. My worry is that he's not really seen as an out-and-out defender. If he's a good WB, then does this mean we're really looking at a 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 formation?

... bit of an old hobby horse this one Screacher, but if YBR really does intend to play YKD behind AS & CC, then I don't see he has any option but to play 3-4-1-2.
I just don't see how we could play with 4 defenders and only three in m/f - I think we'd get buried in m/f in the majority of PL games. Whaddya reckon?

Oh crikey Mr Traz. Not sure. I know you've been going on about LKD behind AS and CC, and I think it probably is his best place. If we play 3 at the back, we're probably going to have to play with WBs as well, so the midfield would likely have AG and AN Other (Quinn) wide. So where does that leave Nobby, GS, Bass and Acuna?

It's been said many times before - we should decide on a formation and fit players in to that. I can't see us doing that with the players we have in a 3-4-1-2 formation, no matter how much it might seem right up front. You don't see the likes of @rse, 'pool and that lot doon the road from me f@rting around with their formation (unless they're 0-1 down at home in the cup).

Other top sides all have coaches with a strong view of how they want to play, and they go about acquiring the players that make them effective in that formation.

We've had Managers who just appear to buy players and then try to figure out how best to play them.

For various reasons BR hasn't yet had the luxury of switching out players and playing the formation he wants to. However, he has indicated several times he wants to play AS & CC together up front. Given that, YKD could only play in a free role behind them. So, without identifying the solution, we have at least identifed the personnel problems that formation inevitably raises. For instance, BR is very keen to keep Solano. In the proposed formation, Solano would have to play RWB - a role for which he is not ideally suited, IMHO.

The Ronnie tonight is reporting John Beresford as strongly recommending that The Toon sign Quinn permanently. Bez says he is a very good player.

I read a piece on another footy site earlier suggesting we might be able to sign Quinn for as little as £800k. He's got to be worth a punt for that sort of money?

For that price we'd be crazy not to take him. He may not be a world beater, but can do the job for us now, and could still be a useful squad player when we do find that elusive 'world class' left back.
