I think making a Nitrogen laser would be idea for a challenge. Its easy to make, with the right tools and materials. It can be finished in about 2 hours. But tweaking it is the hard part. Things needed; Vacuum Pump, Sheet Metal, Microscope dishes (crystal), Tubing, Vacuum Gauges, Nitrogen (not necessary), Home built Capacitor (Sheet metal with thin plastic as dielectric), 15,000 volt transformer. Also to make it more interesting, you can get the people building it to pump a die laser with the N2 laser. make a die laser out of glass tube with some lasing liquid inside, a good variety of liquids work, like anti freeze.

The winner will shoot there laser first, or maybe the brightest and strongest one.

Another idea is to have a small cam filming both teams, and the first team to build an emp device to knock out the camera wins.. lol
