I'm having problems understanding the whole idea of flash/space and was wondering if someone had ideas and suggestions for this in black and whites.

I can't imagine what you are talking about. Describe more.

I had this lens/claustrophobia problem once, but a short course of therapy, and a good wide-angle, sorted me out. ;^)

I just don't use a lens anymore...that solved the problem!

the flash has a guide-number. that number must be the results of the distance multiplied by the aperture number. i mean that if your flash have a guide-number of 40, you cant shoot (always at the sync-speed) at 5meters at f8 (8*5=40). the foot conversion must be in the documentation. but the start point to think on space/flash starts there.
