"Invisible" Fence

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Poodle Support Group : One Thread

I am a new member but have been watching for a while. Have learned a lot from talking with Julie Brost (Julie, they are thriving on the raw food!)and a few others. I have a 12 month old apricot SP and a six month old red SP. I walk them both 5 miles per day but they will still occassionally take off on my 40 acres. Does anyone have experince with SPs and so called "invisible fences". I am willing to run the wire around the whole 40 acres but still want to keep them within those bounds. Thoughts or comments?

Hi Bill! We bought one of those fences and tried it for a couple ......minutes! Now, we were really excited about it, but then I asked our obedience trainer about it...she said, it's ok, but it DOESN'T PREVENT OTHER ANIMALS PENETRATING FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FENCE TO GET TO YOUR BABIES. We paid over $200. for a Contain and Train that would cover an area of up to only 5 acres! You have 40 acres and it might be quite costly for you...also, we had to put the stimulator on our poodle's neck like a collar and train her NOT to cross the line by a tiny electrical stimulus. Her hair was probably too long on her neck, or maybe we didn't do it right, but the stimulator didn't phase her...she ran right up the hill where we were trying to "train" her not to go. It is certainly up to you and your sweet pets, but I would opt for letting them run on such beautiful acreage, with supervision, of course. Take Care. Kathleen

I sell containment systems. The PetSafe Premium system will cover 40 acres and retails for around $200
