Jewish Leeches feeding off Acuna

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Any takers for the caption competition?

Fill in the blanks (BTW, the two leeches are called Ronen Katzav and Barry Silkman)

Silkman saying to Katzav, "we can live off this South American for 4 years Ronen." Katzav thinking "What's all this we buisiness?"

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2001

I thought my Daily Toon jheadline on that story was a good 'un......

Making a sows ear out of a Silkman's purse

"Hey, I think he got his shirt from Gus in Australia".

"Check!"

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2001

I think I'll go with this one

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2001

Hmm. If they were English, would you have titled the thread, 'Christian Leeches Feeding off Acuna'?

Or are you just an anti-semitic c*nt?

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2001

I'm afraid that unfortunate point had crossed my mind also Dan.

I really believe it was simply a very clumsy and acutely insensitive, but nevertheless genuine attempt at humour.

I would ask you to please give the initiator the benefit of the doubt - for the sake of the bbs.

Rik, that 'jewish' reference is seriously out of order. DON'T try telling me 'its only a joke'. Shame on you.

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2001

I too believe this is very, very sensitive issue. It is very politically incorrect. I have never owned a checked shirt!!!

If an apology is not received someone will be hearing from my agent, er I mean solicitor!!

-- Anonymous, January 30, 2001

Hmmm - I'm actually intrigued by this "Jewish" reference. This comes at a time of great sensitivity on the issue as well.

Stevo uses the word non-capitalised which is given separately in my dictionary and means miserly (which sounds even more offensive to me), although I'm sure Rik was using it in the capitalised sense being a member of that religion.

I must admit that my initial reaction was that the reference was offensive although I'm not exactly sure why. We sometimes refer to the French as "Frogs" on here without anyone being exercised about it. The word "Jewish" is not at all derogatory and yet seems to cause offence in this context. Why exactly?

I guess if Dan was offended then my initial reaction is correct. I'm sure if these agents were African the phrase "Black leeches" would also be thought of as offensive. Curiously enough I would not have been offended if the adjectives, "Christian", or "English" or "White" had been used, but then, that might be because I live in a country where none of these are minorities. I suspect that the adjectives "Northern" or "Geordie" would have caused me to bristle somewhat.

I trust no harm was meant Rik - take care next time.

When I first saw this on Riks site my first thought was...why the feck did he mention 'Jewish' agents. Race/creed/religion has nothing to do with being a greedy son of a camel. I wasn't imprssed at all.

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

By the way, I am sorry if anyone did take umbrage at my "frogs" song. I have some French friends in the office and I gleefully call them them frogs and they call us "Rosbifs" and no offence is taken on either side. However, apologies if anyone was offended.

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

Oh come on - lighten up folks. I'm convinced Rik meant no harm. Merely a play on words. With name lik Silkman and Katzav it's quite easy to think they were Jewish, even if they're not. Nad with the "j" being the first word of the sentence, it is correctly capitalised. If Jonno's dictionary is correct then quite an understandable description of the two.

I'm in agreement with Jonno on this. Had it been English, Christian or such I woudn't have given a toss. Even Geordie wouldn't have fazed me - I'd have been more concerned about a Geordie being a leech than the use of the word in a dergoatory sense.

Sorry if this in itself offends - none meant Dan et al.

It offends me Screacher. It will until you apologise to me for saying I send people checked shirts.

The only thing I send are videos. High class ones at that.

Next you will accuse me of wearing Ugg Boots!

Who do you think you are trying to ruin an innocent persons reputation, a journalist?

If I do not get support, the videos will stop!

I'm offended at the capital 'L' on Leeches

seriously though... the term jewish does indeed mean miserly but even the dictionary qualifies this with: (offensive) though the offence is directed at the subject, in this case the agents, rather than the Jewish people.

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

It's the juxtaposition of 'Jewish' and 'leaches' that's offensive because it panders to the racial stereotype. I'm sure it wasn't meant either, but it does need to be pointed out...hopefully without getting too self-righteous eother ;-)

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

I thought ouch when I saw the thread title but when I realised it was Rik I knew it was harmless....

Howay man Dan.....you're not really jewish anyway! you're nearly as much of a rainbow child as tiger woods ;)

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

So I've got to change it to Leeches with Israeli sounding names feeding off Acuna?

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

Oi Gus - I'm only reporting what I saw. When ITK posted your picture on your bathday thread, you damn-well looked like wearing checks as far as me (and ivvry otha bugga) could see. I will expect your appology along with the "other stuff.

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

If you wanted to be really offensive Rik you could just refer to them as "football agents". I can't think of anything more offensive than that.

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

I just can't believe the way some people get wound up over fuck all.

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

As I was saying in my earlier post, Dan ...............(!)

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

I must admit that my initial reaction was that the reference was offensive although I'm not exactly sure why. We sometimes refer to the French as "Frogs" on here without anyone being exercised about it. The word "Jewish" is not at all derogatory and yet seems to cause offence in this context. Why exactly?
Jonno - first of all, the 'literal' thing is a bit of a red herring. Yes, 'Yids' would be more offensive than 'Jews', but the latter is still offensive in a context in which the inference is clear.
Your point about 'Frogs' etc. is a valid one, and 'Frogs' should indeed be as unacceptable as anything else, and in that I use it (and similar terms), I admit I'm as racist as the next man. You say you wouldn't be offended by 'Geordie' and so on, but there is a difference. Those groups who might be seen as more (over-?)sensitive to terms of abuse - for instance Jews, blacks, gays - tend to be those who have been subjected to centuries of misrepresentation, persecution and violence. Geordies may be stereotyped, but they've never been systematically exterminated, and you're unlikely to get bullied at school for being one.

When my father was a little boy in 1930's Berlin, he, his brother and their mother were on a packed bus. They sat down upstairs and were promptly asked to leave as no Jews were allowed on the bus. My grandmother then had to face the humiliation of getting up and taking her boys off the bus as the rest of the passengers looked on. That incident has stayed with my father for nearly 70 years.

I just can't believe how some people get wound up over fuck all
Pretty clear where we all stand, then. Let's get back to football.

-- Anonymous, January 31, 2001

I'm not sure why you're addressing me as I felt I was supporting you Dan.

We all have our crosses to bear (aside from being Toon fans which is bad enough!) The humiliation of being brought up in poverty is devastating for the self confidence. Not being able to go on the school trips, uneasy about going to the school parties and discos coz you don't have any decent clothes, watching me brilliant mam on her knees in front of some b@st@rd bailiffs begging to be allowed to keep her home and her children. This is an image which will remain with me till the day I die and will always bring tears of rage to my eyes. I understand very well what it means to be oppressed.

That Rik's got a lot to answer for eh? :-)

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

Jonno

>>We all have our crosses to bear<<

An interesting (and one might say insensitive) expression in the context of this discussion ...........?

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

hahaha after all Dan's lot did kill Jesus ;)

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

LOL! I just thought about that and came back to this thread to refer to that phrase and say that I didn't hold Dan's lot responsible! You've beaten me to it.

That'll teach me. In the normal course of events I wouldn't be seen dead using a cliche at the end of the day.

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

I'm not normally super-sensitive, but this thread has got worse and worse.
Frankly, I'm really surprised at the insensitivity that has been displayed on this thread by people I would have credited with more class.
Disappointing; but perhaps it would be best to simply draw a veil under it all and move on.

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

Don't know what you're talking about Clarky.....the way I see it is that Rik fucked up (not maliciously), Dan got offended, loads of people have tried to help out by either explaining things or making light of it and I'd kind of got the impression that it was over.....

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

Maybe your right Gav.

Actually, "class" was a very poor choice of words in my own post - wasn't what I meant at all. "Discrimination" would have more accurately conveyed my feeling.

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

Screach, I see where some of your confusion comes from! You should not believe everything you see/read in the media!

The shirt is plain white. It is a trick of the scanning which makes it appear checked. If you look at the picture Mrs gus has the same pattern in her hair!!

-- Anonymous, February 01, 2001

Feeble excuse Guster. We know you and your under cover jobbies. I think you and the Gussette are secret agents working in the Check Republic. OK, OK, I'm off - coat, hat and checked shirt................

-- Anonymous, February 02, 2001

He was wearing a nice check shirt the one time I met him. ;-}

-- Anonymous, February 02, 2001

This is going to sound po-faced I know, but that's tough.

This is a bloody horrible thread - title and all - that reflects no credit whatsoever on this BBS. Every time I log on I keep hoping that it will have fallen off the bottom of the list, but some silly buggers keep banging on about check shirts.

Please can we let the thing die and be buried without trace, which is all that it deserves.
