Gareth Southgate

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

With Aston Villa planning a clear out to raise transfer funds, Gareth Southgate is available, no fee mentioned.

If Goma and Marecllino are to leave I reckon we should get Southgate and him and Hughes can do a job for a few years yet. He may cost

£6-7 million but what he will give us back is worth it. A chance of a settled back four, wonderful?

I think he'd be very good buy - not sure about the price though. Also, no one else has gone for him - why not?

I'm biased anyway - i went to a pub the other night and i was chatting up the barmaid [from Carlisle] when she turns around and says: "You know who you remind me of? - Gareth Southgate...."

No chance there then. ; ((

crashed and burned, crashed and burned....

Southgate wouldn't join us.....he wants to go to a big club who have a chance of winning things.....we're almost identical to villa apart from the fans....

.......and the manager, Gav.

Kenny, you can check out a few lookalikes here (bottom of page).

Plus, Gav = the late Jez Quigley from Coronation Street and
Sting = Sam the mechanic and part-time stripper, also from Corrie!

Only Chelsea and West Ham have publically shown an interest so maybe Mr Southgate is reconsidering his actions and would look forward to a fresh start under Robson?

Hes a good player and captain! and OK if we lose Sid the Sexist and Goma fine but apart from that weve got caldwell.

Southgate's a really good player, but I don't think he's what we need.
He's a wing half, in old money - as is Aaron Hughes, and Dabz IMO. What we really need is a commanding Centre Half - a la The Ugly Man of OT, or Colin Hendry and Gary Pallister at their peak.

Someone like Matty Elliot!!!!!!

Yes I certainly would like Southgate and have mentioned as much before.

However we have to sort out our own defense first. like who is staying and who is going, and who does the manager rate. We have the three bairns Hughes, Stephen and Gary Caldwell who are all ataying. Dabz wants to stay, but scares the sh!t out of quite often. Goma has looked class, but like Marcelino has expressed a desire to leave and the feeling is that BR would cash on them if the price was right.

Back to Southgate. Even at 30 I reckon 6 million would be a good investment. He's a young 30, which means we could percievably get 4 seasons out of him, while bringing the bairns through.

But5 the question remains; What do we do with Dabs.

I'd take him. We have Steve Caldwell coming in as the bruiser centre half and just think what both he and Aaron could learn from Southgate. Having said that, I would gave preferred Ekioghu. Incidentally, there was something in the paper yesterday where Arsene Wenger said that he had had scouts out for five years looking for a decent central defender and there just isn't one anywhere.

Well if we can't find one we'll just have to make one, up steps Steve Caldwell, as you say Dougal.

What makes me laugh is that Wenger has it right under his nose in Matthew Upson who has been the new Tony Adams for years now but has never been given the opportunities that Woodgate, Ferdinand or Brown have had.

I'd like to think we'd give Caldwell the opportunity and not banish him like Arsenal have done to Upson. (Unfortunately for Caldwell, however, Hughes is our young star in that mould!)
