Event report -- Adventure racing "practice race" at Shawnee Mission Park

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

Some local adventure racers/orienteers -- Keith Lay and Eric Saggars (maybe some others?) -- set up a training race at Shawnee Mission Park.

The event began with a bike leg. Most of the bike leg was on roads with a bit on a large horse trail/gravel road.

The next leg was orienteering. The course was quite simple -- 5 controls (I think) with long legs. They added a rule that you could cross roads, but not follow them.

At the last O' control, you got a surprise. You had to solve a little logic puzzle (involving a fox, goose and bag of corn that had to be moved without the fox eating the goose or the goose eating the corn). Once you figured out how to move the fox, goose and corn, you had to actually move a branch, log and sandbag, from one powerpole to another. So, solving the puzzle also took lugging a branch, log and sandbag up a hill and across some small hurdles.

The final part of the course was another bike leg. This time it was mostly single track trails on the north side of the lake.

It was a good way to spend the morning.
