Ferguson interview

Following today's surprise defeat at home to West Ham United, who fielded a one legged keeper, Alex Ferguson was asked his toughts on the game.

"We were a little unfortunate to lose the match although I fully agree with the decision to allow West Ham's goal. Di Canio was clearly onside when the ball was played so the referee had no alternative. I shan't be speaking to Fabien Barthez about his failure to play to the whistle - it's a mistake anyone could have made."

Asked if he thought the defeat was a low point in the club's season, Ferguson replied. "No, far from it! I'm pleased with the progress we've made this year. If you remember, we didn't even get past the third round last season so this can only be an improvement."

When told that West Ham had drawn Sunderland in the next round, Sir Alex replied: "I hope they stuff the mackem b*st*rds."
