Non Cut and Paste Thread: Super Bowl II

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unk's Wild Wild West : One Thread

So the big day is upon us. My true condolences again to all the fans whose team did not make it to the big game.

While I will not predict a score, I think the Giants will win this one by 7-10 points. They stopped the best offense in the business dead cold, and I believe the will totally stop the punchless ravens.

Much has been made of the Ravens defense, but I do not believe they rank up there with the '85 Bears or even the '86 Giants in Lawrence Taylor's prime. They are real good, but Sean Payton will find a way to exploit it. The Giants have skill players-maybe not the best at any position, but they know how to execute.

And I think it will be the discipline of the Giants that will carry the day. They have been quiet, kept to themselves, and they listen to their coaches. They do not talk; they just do.

What do you think>

I think you are in NYC and,,,well you get the point.

Ravens are a LOCK.

this prediction is for entertainment purposes only and in no way indicates one should wager more than a full paycheck on the Ravens

Give me 20 points and I'll take the Ravens.

Baltimore in a runaway...too much defence...

-- Uncle Bob (unclb0b@aol.com), January 27, 2001.

The New York Giants cannot win but the New Jersey Giants can.

WHO GIVES A RAT'S ASS ABOUT THE STINKIN' SUPER BOWL!!!

(To borrow from Doc's disclaimer idea) - This comment was intended for entertainment purposes only and in no way reflects my true feelings now that 2 weeks have passed since the Vikings had been eliminated.

FS- I'll be rooting for your Giants but I think if I were putting money on it I'd probably take the Ravens and the under. (Vegas odds favor Baltimore by 3 with an over/under of 33.) Regardless of the odds, I feel the Ravens defense will be too much for NY to overcome. I happened to catch a couple of their games this year and was extremely impressed. I also give the edge to Baltimore as far as special teams and I think there's a good chance it may come down to that.

As far as your comment: "but I do not believe they rank up there with the '85 Bears or even the '86 Giants in Lawrence Taylor's prime." I think I'd have to disagree with you on that, FS. I'm not sure how many defensive records the Ravens set this year but I know they allowed the fewest points in NFL history.

Should be one of those rare "good" SB games though and I'm looking forward to watching. Although not as much as you are I'm sure, FS. (I can still vaguely remember the feeling from the days when the Vikings made it to the big dance.)

Good Luck! If the Giants win, come back here and gloat a bit. I doubt anyone here would hold it against ya.

Who the hell are the Ravens? Where did they come from?

Don't watch and won't watch any football until the Seahawks start acting like a football team again, some decade...

-- Cherri (jessam5@home.com), January 27, 2001.

I predict the Ads will be more interesting than the game, and the half time show will suck. Giants by 7 1/2 points. I also predict I'll have a house full of teenaged boys and they'll spend most of the time calling each other "pussy" and "faggot". OH God..maybe I'll go out.

-- kritter (kritter@adelphia.net), January 27, 2001.

I predict the first ever 3-0 final score in a Superbowl.

If y'all want some exciting championship football, you should be tuning into the CFL's version of the Superbowl: the Grey Cup (which, by the way, is the oldest professional sporting trophy in North America). Over the past 10 years the Grey Cup has produced way more exciting games than the Superbowl.

Due to the fact that the Ravens have more convicted criminals on their team I think they will win. Sure the Giants kicked the Vikings asses, but the Ravens will no doubt employ electronic signal scrambling so that the Giants will be unable to cheat this time. Plus, I doubt the Ravens will roll over and play dead after 15 minutes of football, as did MN, so the Giants will have to actually play against a team that tries to win. My prediction is, the Ravens win by as much as 20 points.

-- Uncle Deedah (unkeed@yahoo.com), January 28, 2001.

Unk you sure it was 15 minutes? seemed more like 2.

CD don't feel bad, I am a Dolphins Fan. Well at least I ain't no Patriot fan like someone round these parts. Now that is true futility ;)

I did enjoy seeing the RaiderNation wackos go from yelling and screaming to silent unmasking 2 weeks ago---sweeet! Icing was Sharpes little romp, that had to hurt. Ravens who?

-- Doc Paulie (fannybubbles@usa.net), January 28, 2001.

Art Modell does not deserve to hoist the trophy, IMO. So I'm rooting for the Giants.

The Ravens have zero ability to drive 80 yards for a score, so their defense had better cause turnovers in the Giants end of the field and they almost certainly must score once defensively. I'd like to see a safety and both defenses are more than capable of producing one. Perhaps a punt blocked through the end zone.

A word to all: Please be careful on the highways following the game.

-- Rich (howe9@shentel.net), January 28, 2001.

I'm going to agree with FS on this one: the Giants have been working hard. The Ravens have more talent defensively, but I think they'll start off with a bang and then poop out at the end. If the Giants can keep the score close, they'll sneak ahead and win it in the last quarter. No, don't bet any money on this outcome just because I've bet a $1 lotto ticket and a bag of chips, but I can afford to lose, rich working stiff that I am.

Rich, I'm not going farther than my living room, but good advice.

Doc, it looks like FutureShock and the others are a bunch of memes. At least you and I aren't infected...LOL!

which, by the way, is the oldest professional sporting trophy in North America

I beg to differ, Johnny. Grey Cup = 1909 however America's Cup = 1851

FS:

"Giants will win this one by 7-10 points. They stopped the best offense in the business dead cold..."

As a Viking fan, thanks for the compliment, but the way our offense played was far, far from the way they should have played.

We should have made it a game, if not won. Duante really choked, as did or OL. Moss gave up in the second quarter.

You might be looking at an opponent now who won't fall apart like that.

-- Bemused (and_amazed@you.people), January 28, 2001.

The ravens played in the offensively challenged AFC Central-they faced Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, and Cleveland 6 times. The Jets and Jaguars put up over 2o points on them, and I believe two other teams did that. They are not invinsible.

And they should win a championship before claiming to be the best defense in NFL history.

Today will tell. 2 Hours to go.

Congratulations to UB, DP, UD and CD for your correct call. I hope you made some money on your handicapping.

Special congratulations to Kritter--the half game show did indeed suck---bigtime. Like wow, who really wanted to see Britney Spears, Nsynch and Arrowsmith lipsynching to a light show and bad choreography.

Over-hyped super-duper-pooper-scooper Bowl: good riddance. On to the next phoney Super event that "they" have scripted for us.

-- Lars (larsguy@yahoo.com), January 29, 2001.

yeah, yeah, but the commercials...

My fav had to be the Bob Dole commerical! I hooted and howled over that one for at least two minutes! Now THAT was clever!! Talk about sucking you in !!!! Truly a memorable commercial.

-- Aunt Bee (Aunt__Bee@hotmail.com), January 29, 2001.

Well-I am always one to admit when I am wrong. That is a HELL of a defense.

Hats off to the Ravens. I am sad, but they sure deserved it.

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), January 29, 2001.

Always eating their words, guess its what memes do. At least Doc Paulie and I aren't infected! LOL!

On another note a good name for an XFL team would be the Florida Felons. LOL!

-- Not a meme! (not@a.felon), January 29, 2001.

Trent Dilfer has a ring, Dan Marino doesn't. Doesn't seem right somehow. Well at least Rod Woodson got his finally and way overdue!

Next year, the Dolphins will rise again and then probably drown as usual. Hope springs eternal and yes I miss Larry Csonka and co.

Ok who has the skinny on the NHL? Are my Devils good enough again to take the Cup? and what about them Lakers?

-- Doc Paulie (fannybubbles@usa.net), January 29, 2001.

The Devils are a beautiful team to watch. With FSN I see most of their games, and their offense is amazing-for a team that just a few years back was considered to be a defense in search of an offense, this team now leads the NHL in goals per game. And they are not too shabby on the D side either.

Though they have dropped the last 2 in overtime on the road(fatigue?) they have been playing outstandingly of late. I will not predict a Stanley Cup, but they will be in the conference finals from what I can see. Mogilny has been nothing short of perfect lately-20 goals in his last 20 games. Wow.

-- FutureShock (gray@matter.think), January 29, 2001.

..guess I'll have to eat the other one...pass the salt please :)

-- Peg (pegmcleod@mediaone.net), January 29, 2001.

Who the hell are the Ravens? Where did they come from?

Ok KB, should you tell cherri or should I (big evil grin)

-- sumer (shh@aol.con), January 29, 2001.

sumer, you can have the honor. I'm off to a lunch meeting. Hey, it's at a decent Chinese place. I'm prepared for some nasty assignments.

-- kb (kb8um8@yahoo.com), January 29, 2001.

Doc, the Devil’s have a good shot at the cup again but there is a lot of parity in the NHL these days. I can think of at least 5 other teams with a good shot this year and if you believe in ‘magic’, then the Penguin’s could go all the way. I’ll take the Red Wings this year.

The Lakers? I go to quite a few games and there is some disturbance of the chemistry this season. The Zen Master will need to dig deep in his bag of tricks to crank them up in the playoffs. I’ll take Portland this year.

Now, who will rule in the XFL?
