Have the contestants build machines that would bore tunnels through dirt. They could use paddles or some other sort of method.

Although this idea is pretty good, it would present a danger factor. Like the tunnel caving in or something.

well perhaps the machine could be designed to be operated in a safe place. Not sure how.....but with some tweaking this idea may just work
