SRP stops selling power to California utilities Arizona utility Salt River Project has suspended selling power to part of the California energy marketplace.

An SRP spokesman said the utility stopped selling reserve energy to California's Independent System Operator, because of compensation concerns. SRP continues to sell power to the California Department of Water and Power and other municipalities, which can in turn, resell the power through the ISO to the state's primary providers, Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison.

A federal law, extended by President George W. Bush, says that if the ISO issues an emergency request for power, SRP will have to sell power once again to the ISO.

A spokesman for Pinnacle West Capital Corp., the parent firm of Arizona Public Service, said that as of midday today APS is still selling reserve power to the ISO. However, the Arizona utility is watching the situation closely to ensure payment is received, the spokesman said.
