Since the M1 - A1(M) link was finished i'm never sure which way is the better way south - A1(m) to M18 then M1 or stay on the M1.

Stay on the M1 Dave - it's much better/quicker. You eliminate many miles of the old 2-lane section of the AI north and south of Doncaster.

I'll second Clarky's suggestion with the proviso that when you are faced with this choice you should always ask yourself "Is my journey South absolutely necessary?" :-)

Thirded! Only caveat - keep the TP button enabled on your radio if you have such a facility - although it's a quicker route, the odd accident can scupper things so the old A1 is a good option. BTW - there's quite a bit of cop-car activity on the new stretch so look oot (or alternatively keep yer speed doon!).
