Challenge: Street Sweepers

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

I have a suggestion for a Scrapheap or Junkyard Wars Challenge. Street Sweepers mounted on a chassis. There are essentially two directions that you can go in when you build a street sweeper. Either Air , which functions much like a vacuum cleaner or Mechanical broom, which functions like scrub brush/conveyer belt operation. I work for a Street Sweeper company, Schwarze Industries, check out their website for more information at www.schwarze.com. Incidently, I love both shows and all three hosts. Greg really shone in the semi finals, although I do miss seeing Robert, Cathy as always was really brillant. I do suggest that for the US series, emphasis the engineering a little more then what you are doing. RDF and TLC, Great Show!!!!!!!!!! More, More, More

Interesting Idea.

How would you judge the winner?

Would you measure the mass of dirt collected over a fixed time? Do you pick up just dirt and rocks or other debris?

Yeah! spread sand on a parking lot. teams would be graded on weight of sand collected. The Sweepers would look Very MAD MAX and would be at least as intresting as the grain harvester episode.

What I had in mind to judge would be a variable terrain type set up.

A street sweeper is designed to pick up the refuse that we leave behind. I would have a parking lot covered with trash ranging from bags to leaves to paper to dirt to bricks. The team that could sweep the cleanest in the shortest amount of time over a fixed distance would be the winner.
