Pay Per View II?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Hi All,

Just speaking to a mate of mine who is a rep for Cable and Wireless and we were talking about ADSL internet connection. Apparently ADSL will provide a stable 1.5 meg per second download speed (can you even imagine it?) and this will be available in Oz within 12 months.

Naturally I started wondering if the club has any plans to show all Toon games (home and away) over the web as bandwidth wouldn't be an issue and it would mean extra revenue for the club. The club could charge for each match or perhaps they could sell a virtual season ticket.

It would be a blessing for us in faraway places. Thoughts?

Don't forget the exorbitant cost of ADSL Nige, providers which have it (TELSTRA) and whoever they sub lease the lines to will be charging around $100 per month.

I've just ordered DSL in Germany (700k/s) but it will take around 6 months to get it installed. Somer of the guys at work already have it. For around 25 pounds a month you get unlimited internet access - no charges for phone calls. Not bad! I believe ADSL is approximately 4 times faster and will be available at the end of the year.

With a fixed internet access you will all of course be installing a fire wall to avoid getting hacked

Hi Gus,

My mate from C & W doesn't thnk ADSL will be so expensive, it is fair to say that Telstra are being taken to court at the moment as they are trying to slow down the process. It's not in their interest for other companies to be offering ADSL at a cheaper rate. As we know Telstra love to charge the old arm + leg scenario if possible.

I've heard a $50 approx fee per month being what will be charged. That really is not much more expensive than a lot of people are already paying for a 56k connection.

By the way Jonno, maybe the club could bring out the Hughes, Goma, Marcelino, Barton Firewall - to stop even those with Zidane like skills breaking through!!

Still dreaming of every Toon match live............

Someone told me that the problem with ADSL etc is the question of the "weakest link" between your PC and the provider - if the last bit of the cable from the street or exchange or whatever to your house is not up to scratch then no matter how fast the ADSL is up to that point, afterwards it can get slowed to a trickle. I don't know myself - is that true? Also I heard that it can be tricky to instal unless you let the cable or phone company do it for you, plus you have obviously to buy a new replacement for your 56K modem, and maybe you can't choose your service provider afterwards. I think you can get it in Belgium for about 30 pounds a month. Which is less than I pay for telephone connections to the internet, so in that way it sounds pretty good, if all the other doubts turn out to be untrue.

For a home firewall, I just installed "Zone Alarm" which you can get for free as a download. I was advised to get it by someone on our PC helpdesk after I had ended up with a virus called something like Trojan Worm MTX32 which was terrible to get rid of and somehow got through my Norton AntiVirus. It seems to work pretty well. People say that if you have a permanent connection 24 hours a day through ADSL or through Cable TV etc, then it is more or less essential to have a firewall. And remember the ref has the power to move the firewall back an extra 10 yards if you argue.

depends on the cable they're using. Some exchanges [like NZ] are already up to speed on digital cabling so to upgrade to ADSL wouldn't/shouldn't be a problem. I'm still not sure the software is up to streaming live viseo pictures though. It's more than just a cabling issue as far as i can see. Also, there's this Third Generation [T3] stuff which is even faster than ADSL. i think the Telecom companies are trying to work out which will be the cheapest and most cost effective version to launch. with technology moving so fast i don;t think even they know...
