Light intrusion from eyepiece (EOS3)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Canon EOS FAQ forum : One Thread

If I understand correctly, leaving the eyepiece uncovered during exposure will not affect the film but can affect the exposure reading. Am I correct in assuming then that if both camera and flash are being used manually there's no effect at all?

There wouldn't be any effect as long as you did your metering for the manual exposure with the eyepiece covered. If you used a hand held meter, even that wouldn't matter. Same applies to using the flash on manual. Manual always seems to be more reliable if you can take the time for it.

Normally TTL metering wouldn't be affected by the eyepiece being uncovered either, but the E-TTL scheme doesn't use Off The Film (OTF) metering and having the eyepiece uncovered might effect the flash exposure if the ambient light was bright enough.

If it is full manual then there is no problem. If you are taking a meter reading then there could be a problem if you don't have your face stuffed infront of the eyepeice.

The only time I notice a difference in metereing is when there is a bright light source behind me and I do not have myself betweeen it and the eyepeice when pulling the shutter, e.g. set in Av mode and doing landscapes on a tripod. This occurs few times, in my experience. For a solution, I just hold my had or a lens cleaning cloth over the eyepeice.

Thanks to both of you for clarifying that. I should have mentioned that I was using an external flash meter.
