SUGG: Cooling systems

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Junkyard Wars : One Thread

Picture Cathy saying: "The challenge this week is to build a air cooling system--an air conditioner bodged together out of nothing but scrap. We'll test their cooling power in the environmental lab at to find our comfortably-cool winners."

lots of sitting around decoratively fanning and sweating demonstrate what goes on in those nifty environmental labs where they can create a huge range of temperatures Barcelona Olympics had outdoor cooling using airborne mist

Freon Bad! Ozone Good! It'd require vacuum pumps and both teams would use same approach. no drama no tension gotta have diferent systems.

>>no drama no tension gotta have different systems There exist other means of cooling other than compression based refrigeration.

Gas/electric refrigerators operate on the absorption principle. They generally use ammonia as the working refrigerant. They can work without a compressor. They generally use heat to cause the flow of refrigerant through the system. Evaporative Cooling Many primitive cultures and some RV’s use evaporation to cool things. Fans >>Freon Bad! Ozone Good! Maybe true, probably true, but other gases can be used (anyone???) >>It'd require vacuum pumps and both teams ... Technically, it requires a compressor. The working refrigerant is compressed, Cooled a bit Turns to a liquid under the high pressure Sent through an expansion valve. POOF! instant cold

Maybe creating ice cubes would be more visable and interesting.......
