Potty Training Puppy

I enclosed my toy poodle puppy in a small area and covered the area with papers with a plastic underlay. I put toys, water etc. in her area along with a blanket for her bed. She used the papers as her bathroom. After a week or so I began to remove some of the papers. She responded by following the paper. Eventually, I moved the paper outside, took her out, and she again used the paper, but sniffed the grass. In a very short time, she associated going outside with a "walk" of a "bathroom break". She is now 9 years old, and I still put papers down for her at night. (She is epileptic and is on a strong mediction). She rarely uses the paper, but it's there if she needs it and I don't have to get up and let her out in the middle of the night. She's a great little dog, but I found even with positive reinforcement, it took about one year before she was "accident free". Good luck with yours. They are a joy to have around.
