Can anyone understand why we are 'buying' Quinn

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I can't say I've studied the lad but the omens aren't good - Not a regular in a struggling Blades side Sheff United rate Carl Serrant as better Only sae him once when we thrashed Sheff Utd 4-1 Kenny Daglish tried to buy him.

As we are skint & have some cover at left back should we not save our money?

>>>>>Kenny Daglish tried to buy him Oh dear - that is bad news.

You know, Kenny must have had a cunning plan to corner the World market in Left Backs. Had he been allowed to finish the job I daresay we would now have been in a position to sell someone like Beresford for £20m. It all becomes clear now. Oh we of little faith.

The reports have been mixed, good & bad, but how can we go wrong; he is on a month loan if he cannot make the grade then he will go back. On a happier note Des Hamilton has returned to Tranmere. Let's hope he makes a good impression.

YBR has basically said he wants a leftfooter playing at left back. He said it was to replace Domi. Strikes me as bizarre then that Bassedas gets picked ahead of Glass :-)

The situation is certainly confusing. Nominally, Quinn is a left-footed replacement for Domi who Bobby would have preferred to stay. And yet Domi hardly ever played at LB for Bobby, preferring Girffin, Hughes and Barton in that position! Quinn has also played wide left in midfield - where Bobby has consistently declined to play Stephen Glass.

I can only rationalise the situation by believing that Bobby ideally wants to play AS & CC up front with YKD behind them. To provide width and a supply of crosses for the front two, this then dictates playing with three at the back and WB's. Domi would have been the preferred choice at LWB until he did his Lord Lucan impression, and is now probably to be replaced by Wayne Quinn - if he makes a positive impression during his loan spell.

Taking Quinn on loan doesn't bother me at all - at the very least it gets another LB/LWB into the Club at a time when we have only two fit senior FB's. The lad had huge promise a couple of years ago, and played superbly against us in the FAC Semi at OT.

The real question in my mind, if The Plan is to go to WB's, is is Quinn a better prospect in that position than Stephen Glass - who IMO is a talented player, and one who could potentially play there for us.

Arrrggghhhh!!!!

Question: Who would be happier to waite untill summer and the offseason, hopefully offload a few of the players who don't want to stay around and make a serious run at getting Seth Johnson from Derby.

I know I could happily see out the season if I knew Seth Johnson was a major target. I also know that I wouldn't mind paying silly money like 8 million pounds if he was likely to stick around.

Will we complain about 6 million for Dyer or 7 million for Cort if they stick around for another 10 years and are productive for NUFC.

Seth Johnstone, Noooooooo. He is a player that flatters to deceive. Even the derby supporters at work don't think he's that good and he was lucky to be picked for Ingurlund. Blades supporting mate is gutted that Quinn could be joining us on a permenant basis. The original comment about the blades struggling, is a bit harsh, they're not doing too bad at the moment.

In my mind Warren Barton will not continue for years to come and Robson is looking for a new left back. Griffin already looks like he can make it as a right back and given the right support could be here for years. Robson will be looking for someone like Quinn to do likewise on the left.

After having his fingers well and truly burnt with Domi, Robson will revert to sense and buy good english stock with the right ability.

Funny that Robson hasn't signed a South American defender yet, I know he was in for Paz or whoever but maybe he feels midfield is the furthest back he is comfortable with them and they have qualitites they can offer the attacking side of the game.

What happened about Ullathorne - did we just get him fit and then send him on his way or did we keep a hold on him somehow? is he only out (at Norwich?) to gain Premiership fitness before getting himself a full time contract at SJP and earning his first team place on the treatment table?

I never thought for a minute that he would actually sign for us. Just here as he had no club to go to and Robson offered him the expertise of our fitness coaches??! Uh!

The most encouraging posting on this thread is Mick G's - if the Blades fans are gutted then that's good enough for me, surely the best judges of a player are the poor buggers who stump up their hard- earned wedge every fortnight at the turnstiles. I seem to remember a similar reaction from the Stoke fans when we bought Griff. And going even further back the Charlton faithful were gutted when we 'stole' Bobby Lee. Bodes well.

On that basis the Wimbledon fans were laughing their heads off when we paid them £7 million for Cort!

True. And After 2 and a half games we are yet to be convinced about Cort. The postings at the begining of the Season on The Strawb by Wombles planted some serious seeds of doubt in my mind.

I (sort of) go along with Clarky's suggestion about playing 3-4-1-2. In this position, we might struggle if we had to revert to a more traditional LB, and YBR probably rates WQ ahead of SG in this department. Mebbes not much to chose on the attackinbg front, but perhaps defensively??
