Air Tanks on F3s

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Southern Railway : One Thread

I want to model Southern F3 number 4139 in the green scheme with air tanks and 48 inch dynamic brake fan to represent 1955-1959. Are there any air tank kits commercially available? Have there been any articles on kitbashing these on Fs or Es? Does anyonre have photographs of 4139 in service from 1955 - 1960 or good overhead shots of air tank equipped F3s? Any help would be most appreciated.

Larry--I've been waiting for the Highliner kits to do an article on just this subject since there are no F3As with the 48" fan although you could put one into a Stewart F3A. Detail Associates makes both the 12" and 15" dia. reservoirs. There was an article in the Sept/Oct 1987 issue of Prototype Modeler on the E8s and in their drawings the ari reservoirs scale out to 12" dia. The DA kit is 3202. The best phot I have seen of the roof is in Dough Knuckles book on the Southern mainline during the 1960s.He has a sot looking down on the roof with all the piping visible. Good luck wiht th the project-- Larry

The paperback book "Crossties Over Saluda" has a nice photo looking down from the top of a cut on 4 f units. All four tanks are located on the removable panels for the fan units. The tanks are arranged two on each side running front to rear. I did a quartet of Model Power E units using the old wooden dowel with a band of tape to represent the straps holding the tanks to the roof. It came out very well.
