The thread on players leaving suggests that we are fairly cynical about dedication to the club and the existence of old-style black and white heroes. You may have noticed how enthusiastic I am about Aaron Hughes. The reason for this is that the gang at true faith tell a great tale about interviewing Aaron. He thanked them for choosing him to interview, couldn't do enough for them, even made them a cup of tea. They interviewed him again this year, thinking that his success may have made him less pleasant. But he was as modest and sweet and helpful as ever. They say that certaon other players look through them like they are scum and some refuse to be interviewed by the fans. Bobby Robson also tells a tale of Aaron Hughes thanking him for giving him a pay-rise. True Faith also say that he really adores the Toon. Now, times may have changed, but it makes me immensely proud that we have such a nice lad at our club.

LOL. Incidentally, they say that Griffin is in the same sort of mould. However, it's wee Hughesie who's the icon.

Griffin, Hughes, Caldwell, hopefully they are all of the same opinion and can cement their places in the side for a few years.

I have a hope that Wayne Quinn will prove to be the same sort of signing, if Robson's other signings are anything to go by.

Maybe an excellent commanding Centre Half is needed for the experience but with the right attitude in these lads I'm happy for them to continue in the side.

BTW Dougal, do True Faith have a web-site where we can read this sort of interesting info or is it confined to contributors only!

I got that from the editor who thinks Aaron is the mutt's nuts. However, they do mention what a credit Aaron is to the club at every opportunity and are tipping him to be a United captain in a few years.

Yeah but a much better footballer IMHO.

glad to see the heart of our defense is up for tea and the sort, but I wonder if some would prefer the more stalwart type like Mark Wright was.....personally I'd like my defenders to be more along the pit-bull type of personality.... one that strikes fear into strikers hearts....kinda like that bald heeded fella that plays for manure....

Well, the idea is that you get Aaron to do the brainwork and get a big git like Goma to do the leaping around and thumping people. But I forgot, Goma wants to leave. Besides which, have you seen how well Aaron has dealt with the likes of Jimmy Flloyd Hasselbaink this season - very well. Can I add that Steve Harper has a great personality, too.

Harper seems so laid back he is in danger of saving every shot in the horizontal position. He could well become a favourite with the fans as he seems to have a bit of character.

Funny moment at the Derby game (The only moment!) was when the goalie coach slung a cross in towards Harper looking for Given to come and take the cross. The ball was nearer Harper and he aimed a glancing header just beneath the crossbar. Given produced one of the best saves I've seen him make all year to athletically tip it over the bar and believe me the ball was flying.

Anyway Harper turns round and clutches his head, not concerned about almost scoring a great goal but the fact that by heading the ball it had actually quite hurt!

When he came on for Given after half-time he seemed well up for geeing up the crowd as well.

Harper has also been known to do things like go to away games when he is injured and stand in the away section with us.

It also makes me think that players lie Hughes and Harper realise that they are basically lads with no qualifications who are earning bucket loads for playing footie. You get the impression they'd be playing for some Sunday league team if it meant they would get a game at the weekend.

What impresses me is that Harper is doing a degree part-time to try to improve himself etc and have something to do when he finishes being a keeper.

Lets hope it's Physiotherapy!! Do you know what he's actually studying?

-- Anonymous, January 11, 2001

I'm sure I read somewhere that Harper is also a qualified referee. Probably why he gets so p*ssed off with the t*ssers who mess up our games!

It's social sciences, I think. He has presented a TV programme on it anyway.

Harper actually seems to be one of the most level-headed, non-thick footballers around. There was a good interview in the Times(I think?) last year. Studying sociology, qualified ref, plays cricket, and I think doing coaching. He always applauds the leazes end when he takes up his position before each game, spent about 10min fuming over D'@rsehole's incompetence after Leeds goal the other week. Has really started shouting instructions to the other players this season...not that they always listen(Marcelino!). He is the one that led the applause after the Spurs game, also bowing down in a 'we're not worthy' pose.

His performances in the last few games and the way he stayed above Given's dummy spitting have brought him way up in my estimation. He is in danger of becoming another Toon hero for me. (and not just cause I think he's also one of the hottest things in keeper gloves) ;- )
